Why does it seem as though Siny is determined to disagree with Dented, but it doesn't seem as though Dented is disagreeing with Siny? Would it have anything to do with the fact that you're in agreement with Dented?
I see two people with opposing viewpoints each stating their cases and illuminating points the other hasn't. I've actually learned something from each of them.

Was not meant to be an indictment of Siny's behavior; more of a general observation about this country as a whole. There is no center any more. You are either left or right, black or white, bleeding heart liberal or crazy teapartier, and so on. It is just very discouraging.

Posted: 11/3/13 at 11:08amLiza, I am not even arguing my opinion, I am just stating facts. It drives me nuts when people repeat stuff that is not true. Everyone seems to be doing it today and you can't have a rational discussion when it's not based on reality.

There is no center any more.
except this is untrue. obama campaigned and won as a centrist. the ACA is well known to be a compromise with the conservatives from a single-payer/public health option for reasons that don't need to be reiterated.
and then there are issues where a center position is not worthwhile. for example, dented reiterated the oft-repeated phrase that when conservatives are stating an opinion, they are accused of bigotry, which we can be honest and say happens when the country has a discussion about homosexuality. the problem is that they are conflating their opinion with facts that are open to empiric testing.
i.e., the conservative position is that homosexuality is wrong because it is unnatural. this statement carries about as much weight as opining that 2 + 2 = 5. one can opine that 2 + 2 = 5 all they wish, but that will not make it true. the fact is, homosexuality does occur in nature. that is not an opinion, but a statement about the world around us which is open to testing. and here, there's no contest. homosexuality does occur in nature and is "natural." and this is not from one piece of controversial data, not two, not three, not ten, but a veritable mountain. meanwhile the conservative position has exactly zero. so in this matter, we are being asked to make laws on one position that has a mountain of evidence, and one that literally has zero, and come up with a middle ground.
this is a waste of time which besides has destroyed thousands of lives. the laws which bind everyone should be made with our best possible evidence. people who claim to "care" should really give that some thought--about how many people, many of them children, have been driven insane or outright killed themselves because western society gives equal weight of "opinions" with zero evidence with verifiable data.

Posted: 11/3/13 at 12:00pmOh Beth I love you. This is the real tragedy in America: There are no "facts" any more, just opinions and all must be granted respect and equal time, no matter their accuracy. I really noticed it when the "Cut taxes and US tax revenue INCREASES" canard was trotted out under Bush.

Full throttle applause for Bethnor. For the record, I am a fiscal conservative and social liberal - there used to be Republicans I would vote for. Those moderates have, to a great extent been driven out of the GOP.
The fact that beliefs have replaced facts in our national discourse is a shame. At to a great extent facilitated by 24 hour news media that needs content.
BTW - for those on the right that believed that California was going the way of Greece (and I think, to a great extent hoped for it to happen), the facts tell a very different story.

"Those moderates have, to a great extent been driven out of the GOP."
This phenomenon has been echoed here at Broadwayworld. We rarely see the grown up Republican posters who used their own brain power and then their very own words to articulate their own ideas and put them on this board for discussion. They have been driven away by cut and paste soundbyte plagiarist trolls and lazy thinkers who publish others half-baked ideas which, if anybody dares to scrutinize and respond, causes the most petulant replies that are never, ever about the ideas they have published here as their own.
No wonder the exodus has happened.
