Hi..I'm a musical theater student at Oklahoma City University which is truly one of the nation's leading MT programs.

I know many of you have questions about OCU and I'm more than happy to help you learn about our wonderful school. here are some basics:

A private university...located in Oklahom City (you'd be suprised how many people ask!)...receive a BM in MT..you can also go thru somewhat similar training and receive a BFA in Music...very selective music program...check audition requirements here: www.okcu.edu/music...first auditions are November 18th and 19th and you can learn of your acceptance by December...talented students can receive music talent scholarships...brand new $38 million dollar music school opens in 2006 making it the premier music facility in America...MT students study legit voice and often cross over to appear in our operas.

OK..now it's your turn. Fell free to ask and I'll be able to help you. Thanks!

Hi..I received a nice PM asking what makes Oklahoma City University different than the rest. I thought I'd share the answers with you!

OKlahoma City University Bass School of Music Musical Theater Program is indeed a demanding and selective program. Each year, OCU sees more applicants that can be admitted. The reason is simple...OCU offers some things that others don't!

1) A musical theater major takes required dance classes taught by the instructors of OCU's award winning Lacey School of American Dance and Arts Management. These are dance teachers who teach classes for those who are majoring in dance. OCU musical theater students attend the exact same classes (when you have made it into a leveled class) that that dance majors do. Unlike other schools, OCU does not hire independent dance instructors to teach their MT majors dance. As a result, OCU MT students must follow the same policies as the dance majors. And no breaks are given because you are a MT major!

2) You do not audition for acceptance into the MT program after your first year. If you are accepted to the BM MT program after your audition, you are a MT major. There is no reauditioning.

3) OCU does not have nor believe in a "cut" policiy (a policy that reevaluates a student after their freshmen year and, if deemed necessary, the student is released from the program and the university). OCU realizes that each student that is accepted has potential and perhaps doesn't reach their full potential till their junior or senior year. When you are admitted, you are able to remain a MT major.

4) Freshmen are able to be cast in OCU shows their first semester. In fact, many are cast their first week at OCU! We just had several in the cast of "Guys And Dolls". OCU offeres numerous performance opportunities each semester that gives telented students the chance to apply their classwork on the stage.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to send me a PM. I look forward to talking with you!

I have a question. I have been in love with OCU ever since I was in 3 shows there when I was 12 (long story short, choir director told me about a audition for "Street Scene" and was in "King and I" and "Crusade" because of that) Unfortunetly, I wasn't accepted this past spring to be a freshman. I am now at Rose State College, majoring in music. My question is, how meny transfers, compared to freshman, are accepted?

As someone told me lately: "Ev'ryone deserves the chance to fly!"... He's there, the Phantom of the Opera!... I dreamed a dream in time gone bye... This is the moment! My final test!... PS. Couldn't choose just one :-)

Hi...thanks for the message!

I'm glad you'd like to come back an audition for OCU. We have several students who reaudition the next year and are accepted. There is no quota for how many transfer students are accepted. It is all talent based. Make sure you signed up for our first auditions on Nov 18th!

If you have any questions about transfering to OCU, feel free to contact Janelle Warlick, OCU Transfer Counselor, at jwarlick@okcu.edu. or give her a call at 1-800-633-7242 extension one. She'll be happy to help. Thanks!

Hi!

Just wondering... As I have already said, I am auditioning for the MT program in November, but my voice teacher wants me to audition for the vocal performance program as well. I know I could call and ask the office, but I was going to get your opinion on this. Is this commonly done or even aloud?? Would they automatically consider me for both programs in the same audition since they are closely related?? Could I audition for both seperately on the same day?? Thanks for the advice!!

Hi...I'm not sure if you can study both MT and vocal performance as a mjaor at the same time. I believe you can MAJOR in, say MT, and then MINOR in vocal perrormance at the same time. There are different class requirements that you must take for both of these majors and I suppose it can be done. For a more detailed answer, feel free to contact Mary Mowry, Bass School of Music student services director, at mamowry@okcu.edu or at 1-800-633-7242. She'll be happy to help.

And when you come in November, you'll be able to see a knock out version of "Pirates of Penzance"!!

From the website, it looks like there is a graduate program in MT. Do you know if it is necessary to have an undergraduate degree in music to be accepted, or can any major apply?

Yes shoe! Oklahoma City University is one of the few universities that offer a master degree in musical theater performance. I'm not sure if you need a degree in music, but there are some requirements that you do need to meet before being admitted (undergrad music recital, pass music theory and sight reading test). Please contact Mary Mowry (info above) and I'm sure she'll be able to help you. Thanks
