Agathe von Trapp, the eldest of the seven children whose story inspired the Sound of Music, has died aged 97.
Her close friend, Mary Louise Kane, said yesterday that Ms von Trapp had died of congestive heart failure at a hospice in Towson, Maryland on Tuesday.
Ms Von Trapp lived in Glyndon, Maryland, where she and Ms Kane ran a kindergarten.
Agathe was the oldest daughter of Austrian naval officer Captain Georg Ritter von Trapp, whose seven children were the basis for the family in the 1965 musical starring Julie Andrews.
Her sister Maria, 96, and half-siblings Rosemarie, Johannes and Eleonore, who later sang with the family, are still alive.
The von Trapp family left Austria in 1938 to escape persecution by the Nazis over Capt von Trapp’s refusal to accept a naval commission.
They fled to the US and built a career as the Trapp Family Singers or as the von Trapp Family Choir, performing until 1947, when Capt von Trapp died.
It was Agathe’s stepmother, Maria von Trapp – mother to Rosemarie, Johannes and Eleonore – who wrote The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, which became the basis for the 1959 musical, adapted to film six years later.
