LOST HORIZON (the musical)-- one of the greatest of all bad films.

HOUSEKEEPING -- a wonderful little film by Bill Forsyth that is making its long overdue appearance on DVD. Strange and haunting and essential viewing.

I love "Housekeeping", but it's an even better novel.

I'm not going to say that Marilynne Robinson's novel is "better" than the film, but it is really something. I'd never have read the novel if it wasn't for the film, and both novel and film deserve to be better known.

A friend and I were discussing Lost Horizon. We agreed that "they", meaning Hollywood-types, don't know how to make bad movies like this anymore possibly because they don't know how to make book musicals at all anymore. It seems like a musical nowadays is a concept musical.

Lost Horizon is a true stinker of the highest (lowest?) order, but at least somebody tried.
