I love that someone as fiercely funny as Stephen Fry is this brilliantly insightful.

Posted: 5/1/09 at 1:43pmThanks- I read about this on AfterElton but they didn't include a link to the whole letter so it was a bit frustrating. This is much better.

I have so much respect for Stephen Fry. Not just as an actor/comedian but as a person.
Did anyone see his amazing performance in Wilde? Your heart just broke for him.

On a similar train of thought, the film "Philadelphia" was on TV late last night. Have not watched it in a long while, and was absolutely blown away by 2 small scenes: The "Maria Callas playing" in Tom Hank's apt. scene, w/that incredible close-up on Denzel's face (no dialogue)., AND...
that small piece of dialogue where Denzel expresses plainly and simply to Hanks how his own religious upbringing (and the "outside" world) views homosexuality. It was so brilliantly, simply written, directed and underplayed by Denzel, it was shockingly REAL. The exact words I can't remember. Watch the film again, if you're interested.

1. I love everything about Stephen Fry.
2. If I NEVER see the phrase "openly gay" again, it'll be too soon.

Thanks.

When I started to read his letter I thought flippantly that he must have just seen the London production of Spring Awakening ("How I admire your arrogance and rage and misery. How pure and righteous they are and how passionately storm-drenched was your adolescence.")
But actually this letter is the precise opposite of what Hanschen espouses in his understand-how-the-system-works-and-make-it-work-to-your-advantage credo.
My reading of the Off-topic board suggests there are rather more idealists than Hanschens posting here?
Does anyone have any thoughts on the comment left by Rosieh2: "Good heavens, you know you've reached a new low when you're patronising yourself"?

So I'm not the only one who found it pretentious and ponderous, then. That's a relief.
At 16, I was touring with Barbara Eden in Annie Get Your Gun. I didn't have a care in the world! No letters required.
