re: Opera lovers in the house?

Adgal - That sounds like it will be a great performance! I enjoy Harolyn Blackwell's voice. I met her in DC at a recital and she is a wonderfully warm person.

I have a soft spot for Kathleen Battle and I regularly listen to her "Endless Pleasure" from Semele when I'm having a bad day. On the other end of the female spectrum I have been listening to Ewa Podles sing some great arias from Rinaldo. I've also always been a Dawn Upshaw fan -she's done some good crossover work.

If anyone is need of a good laugh, find a copy of Florence Foster Jenkins and you'll hear some GREAT opera. Her Queen of the Night aria is flawless....
I sing for myself. I sing when I want, whenever I want to, just for me. I sing for my own pleasure. Do you understand that?

BT - I'm looking forward to it!

I've sung with Kathleen Battle...DIVA! But, stunning voice.

Ewa Poodles and Harolyn Blackwell sang with us last year when we performed 'Un ballo in maschera' at Carnegie.

And, Dawn Upshaw has collaborated with us on many an occasion.

Jenkins sounds like she's imitating a wire-haired terrier as she tries to get through the Queen of the Night aria. SO bad it's good.

Incidentally, the York Theatre Co. has a play opening next month called "Souvenir" which is about Jenkins. I may have to check it out.

Hey Margo--watch what you say about wire-haired terriers or Miss Holly might give you one of her very best grrr-r-r-r's.

re: Opera lovers in the house?

I bet that Miss Holly would do a better job as the Queen of the Night than Jenkins ever did.

re: Opera lovers in the house?

I love opera...when I was young enough, I did the NY City Opera Big Deal program (Highly recommended). I saw enough of them to realize what I like...mainly Puccini. La Boheme is my favorite.

re: Opera lovers in the house?

I listen to opera, mostly thanks to my dad, but I don't follow it. The opera I've seen the most is the film version of The Magic Flute- I used to watch it all the time as a child because I was strange like that. :) So I'm really looking forward to seeing Taymor's vision of that opera, which I'm probably going to see with my set design class.

re: Opera lovers in the house?

Plum, does your class already have tickets, cuz I heard it was already sold out?
Word. Word, indeed.

re: Opera lovers in the house?

I heard the same thing because I wanted to go. I think there's another slate of performances, though, in the Spring.

Do they have SRO? Because otherwise my teacher has really out-absentminded herself, which is saying something. Oy.

re: Opera lovers in the house?

They do have SRO, which goes on sale Saturdays (??? -- it's been a while since I've done it) for the following week. I don't think they do group sales for standing though, so I think the class would be responsible for getting its own tickets (get in line and you can buy two per person).

Maybe you can all join me for their Boheme? re: Opera lovers in the house?
Marcelo Alvarez, anyone? Thoughts?
Word. Word, indeed.

re: Opera lovers in the house?

Alvarez is first rate -- a real up-and-comer. I saw his Duetto concert with Licitra and was impressed. A gorgeous lyric sound that will only improve as he matures.

re: Opera lovers in the house?

I feel out of place here...I was an opera performance major in college. *no, that's not why i feel out of place*

Does anyone love Andrea Bocelli as much as me? I am enthralled with this guy. from Romanza to his Verdi album to Cieli Di Toscana. *sigh*

re: Opera lovers in the house?

I can honestly say that I have never been to see a live opera performance. And I have no idea why! I used to have a music teacher that adored opera and I learned to play quite a bit of Wagner, Verdi and Rossini. During one concert, we were playing selections from Lohengrin and I found it so moving that I wanted to cry. Maybe I should go see an opera...............

Margo, thhat was exactly what I wanted to hear!! I love that Spanish (albeit Argentinean) sound to tenors. I'm a big fan of the "hooker" sound in tenors. Licitra is much more of the bel canto style and I like that too, just not as much. Now you got me thinking of putting my Duetto DVD in. re: Opera lovers in the house?

re: Opera lovers in the house?

If I recall correctly, Pal Joey attended Julie Taymor's Magic Flute at the Met last week. Did you enjoy?

re: Opera lovers in the house?

Licitra has sung with us twice. Last year's 'Un Ballo in Maschero' and the year before in "La Forza del Destino".

He is also giving a special benefit recital for us on May 25th. He's been wonderful to collaborate with.

PalJoey - I'm curious to hear your review of Magic Flute, also. I have tickets for the April 8th performance.

2005 is already very busy...

has anyone ever seen "Un Ballo In Maschera"? I love the music but I'd love to see it even more.

re: Opera lovers in the house?

"Forse la soglia attinse" is one of my favorite arias to sing AND listen to. One of, I might add, my favorite arias sung by Jose Cura, too. I haven't seen Ballo performed live though. It doesn't seem to be done very often in America. Done a lot at La Scala.
