I'm sorry, but am I a snob because I'm mad that Oprah picked Edward Sawtelle for her next book club selection? I love this book so much that the idea of that STUPID Oprah sticker on the cover makes me cringe. This is one of the best books I have ever read and for some reason I hate the idea of it on Oprah. Go ahead, call me out.. I'm being petty, right? Does anyone feel the same?
I had the exact same reaction.
One of my favorite books of all time is an Oprah selection...I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb. The big gold "Oprah" sticker almost made me pass it up, but I'm glad I took the chance.
But, even Oprah has to get it right once in a while, right?
Thus, this book that you love will now become (if it hasn't already) a mega-selling hit, possibly secure its place as a classic, and best of all, get made into a film.
(the last part was semi joking)
I would think if you love the book, you would be glad that it will now be ready by many, many, many more people.
It is a catch-22. you want people to read the book, but you don't want the big gold sticker on your favorite book for your collection. If they would just put a sticker on the front, like a price tag, that could be removed!
THE ROAD was nuthin' to sneeze at, either.
Initially, she chose some lame lame books among some good titles but it seems she and her staff are being more discriminating.
And the thing is.. I like some of her other selections. (I Know This Much Is True was GREAT newgirl!) I don't know...Didn't Jonathan Franzen have a problem with The Corrections being a selection? I may be wrong.
I'm not familiar with all of the books she has chosen, but the ones that I've read have been pretty good.
I actually have I Know This Much Is True on my bookshelf. I have tried and tried to read it but I just can't get into it.
I guess I should try it again huh? I loved his She's Come Undone.

Yeah, Franzen had a bit of an allergic reaction to his book being selected. The book was pulled from the club, there were charges of snobbery and reverse snobbery, it got rather nasty.
That's right, Roscoe. I forgot. They had already printed covers with that Oprah sticker and Franzen was not happy about that.
Speaking of Franzen. The Corrections (and I know I stand alone on this) bored me.
