I have always wanted to audition for Phantom of the Opera, and I really think I want to try this year. However, I am completely stumped on audition songs. They said to show the top of your range and you may be asked to sing a high c, no pop/ rock, but sing legit musical theatre/ opera/ or operatta. I usually have some idea about what to use for auditions, but this show has me completely stumped. I want to audition for Christine and I can sing up to a high F.
Well, I know a friend of mine who was Chrstine sang "Unexpected Song" and the people running the auditions thought it was a perfect audition song for the role. I don't know if I agree with that, but it's not bad.
My friend who audition and got several callbacks for christine in vegas, sang Juliet's Waltz from Romeo et Juliet by Gounod. And the same girl was asked to sing the last bit of the title song after she sang, including the high E. If you are going christine, make sure you can sing the high notes then and there. They might "type", they did last time they had a call and they only typed in I think 4 girls out of the hundreds that were there (non-eq). Hope that helps, and yes I think "Unexpected Song" is good for this audition, but it doesn't show much of your top, it shows range but the highest not is only a G.

Thanks for your help! What is unexpected song from? I am not familiar with it. I will make sure I am warmed up, so I can sing that E. Thanks again for the advice!

I started checking out Romeo et Juliet. Is there a version in English because they ask that you sing in English? Also, do you know what the French name of Juliet's waltz is?
It is called Ah Je Veux Vivre, it is rather difficult. It is in French and there isn't a translation for it. If they are saying to just sing in English I wouldn't do it, plus how old are you? Juliet is supposed to be what 16, but vocally it is very challeging so I would sing it if you are younger.
I would also try "Tonight" from West Side Story, the quartet version with the High C. or maybe even some good ole' Rodgers and Hammerstein. Don't worry about the whole singing up to the "C" in your song, they might have you vocalise up to it or something or sing the end of the Title Song if they want to hear more.
Are you going to the Open Call or the Equity Chorus Call?

I definitely would like to learn Ah Je Veux Vivre. It started looking to buy the music for this opera. I am 22, but look closer to 16. No one believes me when I tell them I'm 22. They think I am about 16, sometimes 18, and I even get 14.
I actually thought about "Somewhere" from West Side Story. "Tonight" might be nice too. I wish I had more time to prepare for this then I could learn "Unexpected Song." I still want to learn it for the future though.
I wanted to go to the open call because I am non-equity, but I had been going back and forth about what to sing. I think airfare will cost me a fortune at this point so I may not go. A friend of mine told me if you are auditioning for a specific part (the audition is just for Christine & Piangi), you can sing one of that person's songs. I would love to sing a song from the show, but I didn't think they would like that. Do any of you have experience with auditioning in New York?
I do have audition auditioning in New York. It is nothing too horrible. If you are going to the Open Call, I would just sing the last like bit of the title song. From "He's there the phantom of the Opera. Ah-------" and so on. to show some range. I would go up to the "C" at least and maybe go for the "E" if you feel up for it.
The Open call is for the Las Vegas production, just for your info. They were very nice when I auditioned for them a while back. Auditions in New York, especially open calls, be prepared to wait a long long time and get there early, really early.
A friend of mine went to the open call for the Piangi replacement on Broadway and got down to the final 3. He IS non eq. He sang a song from "Les Miz" one of Val Jean's songs. I guess it's a matter of how you put over the song.
Break lots of legs!!! Even if you get seen for the Vegas Company, Tara Rubin usually rotates the casts from tour to vegas to bway!

Unexpected song is from song and Dance, just to clarify. Break 1000 legs at the audition! (It's my dream to be in POTO, too)

For the record, Vegas is an equity production, too...they just happened to have an open call for it.
