soo, kinda random, but I was just curious.
I'm watching Dr Phil do a show on PTSD, and I'm still on the fence as to whether or not I am agreeing with all that he says.
Anyone else watching this? What do you think?
:edit: you don't have to be watching the show, I'm just gathering peoples opinions on the subject.

Ok since OBVIOUSLY this is going in the wrong direction:
I have PTSD. I was raped, at work, by someone who got away with it. I very much recognize the seriousness of the illness.
But whats sad is that a lot of people don't. Or they think its just for vets.

Posted: 2/17/09 at 6:03pmOh ok, I see where you're going with this. I'm so very sorry that you've had to go through that and have to deal with that and the PTSD. There are a lot of very real issues that people don't recognize, because they can't see past their own life and how things affect them. I don't understand how they can think that it isn't real. To me it makes sense that if someone has had something traumatic happen to them, they could have long-lasting serious issues to deal with. Not only mentally, but physically, as well. I don't really understand why so people don't see that. Updated On: 2/17/09 at 06:03 PM

Posted: 2/17/09 at 8:19pmI think the reason this was going in the wrong direction is because you didn't say WHAT you agreed with or disagreed with or even what was being said on Dr. Phil. What exactly was he saying that you were on the fence about?

yeah I caught that :) my bad everyone!
It just comes across as a very one sided issue whenever anyone talks about it. And when you've just told someone that you think they have PTSD and then start replaying surveillance and recreating the stories that caused this, thats not really going to help. (mostly what happened on tv today)

Usually, when people don't know enough facts about something, like an illness, they choose to believe its not real. People also do that when they are scared of something. Those people are just ignorant of the facts and choose to hide their heads in the sand. Its easier for people to deny something than it is to learn about something. I have had PTSD (I have had much therapy and am fine today thank God), but back when the real problems started because of it, people said I just wanted attention!! Which is the last thing I wanted because of what happened to me. People are cruel that way.
Its the same with other types of illnesses too, I have RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy) which is, in laymans terms chronic pain syndrome. My nerve endings NEVER shut off sending pain signals to my brain. because though in the beginning you couldn't see an injury ...I was just exaggerating. Well I wasn't, and now 8 years later from onset, you can actually see the deformities in my leg because of the muscle and bone atrophying. ut I digress, lol sorry. This subject is just really close to me...I spent many years of my life with people saying I am making it all up for attention. I actually HATED having attention on me, unless I was dancing, which is something that I can not do at all anymorebecause of my disease. Its sad!!

Having experienced how cruel (no matter how unknowingly) people can be to someone, I can only imagine how you must be feeling. You seem wonderfully strong and brave, and thank you for you comment :)
