Hello all, My son , who is just starting his Senior year in high school plans to major in Scenic Design / Set design in college. He is very talented and actually won 1st place for Set design at the International Thespian convention in Lincoln Nebraska this summer, our mailbox is overflowing with glossy brochures from colleges and I was wondering if any one out there might have some advice or reccomendations for the best Technical theater programs and the colleges that offer them.
take a look at mason gross school of the arts at rutgers university in jersey. great program, and pretty affordable. close enough to work in nyc, make some contacts, and keep networking throughout his undergrad.
I think you need to STRONGLY look at Syracuse and SUNY Purchase. Both schools have LEAGUE OF RESIDENT THEATRE connections with both staff and students. At least 90% of their graduates are members of IATSE, IBEW and working in film and regional theatres across the country.
Several of my students have attended Rutgers and all of them transferred after 1 semester. The head of their department is on a long-term sabbatical and the "inmates are running the asslym."
