Just watched this again last night - for the umpteenth time - and was still entranced by the sheer realism of what was put on film. Real characters, in real situations having very real emotional reactions to them. Quite an accomplishment for a 'first film' - THANK YOU Bill Sherwood. He wrote, directed and edited this wonderful and rich entertainment. It is a true shame that we weren't able to get more movies from him - but I'm VERY thankful for the one gem that he left.

Major bump:

I watched this last night and I agree with you completely. There are certain queer themed movies that are must-see and Parting Glances is one of them.

Yeah, this is a sadly overlooked movie, it doesn't get a lot of attention. Wasn't it restored recently?

I watched it on DVD if that's what you mean by restored.

I saw this in a theater when it first came out. Always been a big Buscemi fan. Can you believe that is Kathy Kinney? (Mimi of Drew Carey fame)

I thought Kathy Kinney was more or less a nicer version of Mimi. Her character after all does dress up and has a dance-off with Drew in the infamous Rocky Horror/Pricilla episode.

Roscoe:

"In 2006, Outfest and the UCLA Film and Television Archive announced that the film would be the first to be restored as a part of the Outfest Legacy Project.

On Monday, July 16, 2007 as a part of the Outfest Legacy Project, a restored print of Parting Glances received its world premiere at the Director's Guild of America in Los Angeles. The four major stars of the film, Richard Ganoung, John Bolger, Steve Buscemi, and Kathy Kinney were all in attendance and participated in a panel discussion after the viewing."

When I saw this subject line I thought, "Oooh, I love this movie!" - and then saw I started the thread re: Parting Glances

Thanks for clearing that up, DG. Maybe they'll re-release it on DVD.

Thanks, DG, I knew I remembered something about that. One of the few really good gay-themed movies.

I can't find anything about releasing the restored version on DVD, though. I would hope someone would eventually.

It's so sad that this is all we got from Bill Sherwood. Not only is it obviously one of the best gay films, it's simply a good film in general. One can only imagine what else he could have given to the world.
