Partner Snooping

Your boyfriend (and for the select few, girlfriend) leaves their e-mail signed in on your computer. Do you read it?

re: Partner Snooping

I'd probably take a peek, but I wouldn't try to hide the fact that I had looked. My boyfriend knows how inquisitive (nosy) I am. Why, did you and yours get in a fight over this or something?

re: Partner Snooping

I would like to say "No, that's not respecting someone's privacy" but unfortunetly, I would probably end up checking it. I'm not condoning it but I guess I should practice what I preach before I tell someone else not to.

I am very curious... but I would NEVER do that. I actually broke up with a bf because he did... I mean, it wasn't the only reason, but it was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I heard they caught a robber somewhere in California because he left his email account signed in on the PC in the house. Clever, clever guy...

re: Partner Snooping

No. My partner has left his email open. I never look. I figure if there is anything there that concerns me, he'll tell me about it. I also enver look in his dresser drawers, closet, read his mail or check calls on his cell phone.
If you feel a need to do anything like that, what does it say about your relationship?

re: Partner Snooping

It means your normal. People do bad things to people they 'love', even if you think they are nice things.

re: Partner Snooping

Never. I dont even like to look at his mail when he asks me to open it (if he's away.)
It's mutual respect...nothing to hide in mine, but would be pissed if he read it...it's insinuating there is something in there to see.

exactly doodle, well said....these other things "I have nothing to hide" or saying it's normal to do bad things to those you love is just bullsh** and an excuse to pry.

re: Partner Snooping

Absolutely not.

A relationship is based on trust and respect. I would never betray that.

That may be true but, it doesn't make it right. I'm sure I sometimes do things unintentionally but, snooping is never unintentional.
I figure there is nothing in his email, mail or phone messages that concerns me. If there were, he'd tell me about it.

re: Partner Snooping

i would never read my man's email ... because there's way too much spam to wade through to get to any good parts! actually, we can use each other's accounts whenever we want/need to. we share 99% of everything.

Is it okay if you do it to friends, but not to a partner? Just as a Joke?

re: Partner Snooping

I'd never dig through his private stuff, or insist on checking his phone to see who he's called. But really, if I did look through his phone list or he looked through mine just out of curiosity, I don't think either of us would feel mistrusted. And sometimes if we're just chilling in his room I dig through his stuff and make him play dress-up (hehehe), but if he didn't want me to, I'd quit.

I think that's trust. Feeling comfortable that the person you're with trusts you, and feels he can be honest enough to share his personal life with you. And at the same knowing he'll let me know if I do something that bugs him, and I'll do my best to change it. And vice versa.

The idea that looking through someone's e-mail is a huge invasion of privacy strikes me as pretty juvenile. I mean, "gimme your e-mail password, I don't trust you" is an invasion of privacy. "I'm bored and Billy Bob left his e-mail open. Let's see if there's anything interesting," is not.

re: Partner Snooping

I've been in that situation several times, where he would leave his email account open. And no, I never read it.

"I'm bored and Billy Bob left his e-mail open. Let's see if there's anything interesting," is not.

If you don't have permission, it's still an invasion of privacy. If you do, then that's a different story.

"I have nothing to hide."

Nor do you have anything to show, Captain.

Dan Savage took up this topic in his advice column. A young woman was complaining about something she found in her BF's email and he suggested she break up with him, not because of the information she found, but because he would be better off without a partner such as she.
