After reading the Hollywood Squares thread I just had to start a Paul Lynde one. The guy was brilliant! Way ahead of his tme. I prize my bootleg dvd of his Halloween special. The campy's dvd I own!

A friend of mine recalss hearing a great Paul Lynde story.I'm paraphrazing here, so I may be a bit rusty. As the story goes, Paul Lynde was on a long flught & probably had a little too much to drink. This little girl was kicking his seat & screaming. Having had enough, Paul turned around to the little girl's mother & scowled, "If you don't shut that little girl up I'm gonna **** her!" There was not a single peep from the child for the rest of the flight. I can see it all too clearly. HILARIOUS!

Paul was out & comfortable with it back then. Everyone knew he was gay & was cool with it.I heard he could be a mean drunk but also a very sweet man.I would have loved to know him!

I loved him as Uncle Arthur on "Bewitched"

This just may be the gayest thread title ever.

Paul Lynde was a scream! I loved him in Bye Bye Birdie, on Hollywood Squares and, of course, as Uncle Arthur.

I think it was great that he always seemed so comfortable in his skin and with who he was. Many of us have a million hang-ups.

Paul Lynde actually appeared on Bewitched in an early episode as a different character - a man Darrin hired to teach Samantha how to drive a car. It is a hilarious episode - he is manic and constantly eats these giant tranquilizers he call's "cookies" and to this day, I quote him when someone gets a bit crazed "Give her a Cookie!!!" (in his voice, of course)

"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

I heard he wrote alot of his zingers on the Hollywood Squares. The man was so ahead of his time. Just think what he'd be doing today.

Romanitco, the story that I heard was that is was just a baby that kept crying. Paul had had slightly too much to drink and he said, "Lady, if you don't shut that baby up I am going to f**k it!"

Can you imagine him playing a straight dad on the Paul Lynde show? lol

Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

No matter how many times I hear it, “How’ll we ever beat the Russians?” cracks me up every time.

He was an extremely funny, witty guy.

"Paul was out & comfortable with it back then."

I've actually heard quite the opposite, which is what most attribute his alcoholism and depression to.

He was, simply, one of a kind.

Well, Perhaps I should correct what i said. I "assume" he was comfortable with being out.He sure acted it but maybe that was why he drank. He knew. A & E Biography did a nice episode on him which was actually kind of sad. E's true Hollywood Story did a Hollywood Square special as well with Paul featured.I should read the book "Center Square:The Pual Lynde Story".

Well, being out and ok with it might have nothing to do with the pressure others were putting on him because of his sexuality. The real truth is that we might never know the real truth.
But he certainly made me laugh and god knows I think we'd all have to admit he's sort of the entertainment pioneer of the snarky gay sensibility that still exists today.

Oh, Templeton.

Bruce Vilanch wrote for Paul and tells hysterical stories about Lynde's road show.

These are a few of my favorie Hollywood Squares lines:

Peter Marshall: Paul, why do Hell's Angels wear leather?
Paul Lynde: Chiffon wrinkles too easily.

Peter Marshall: According to Tony Randall, "Every woman I've been intimate with in my life has been..." What, Paul?
Paul Lynde: Bitterly disappointed.

Peter Marshall: Prometheus was tied to the top of a mountain by the gods because he had given something to man. What did he give us?
Paul Lynde: I don't know what you got, but I got a sports shirt.

Peter Marshall: When Richard Nixon was Vice-President, he went someplace on a "good will mission," but instead wound up being stoned and shouted at. Where did this take place?
Paul Lynde: Pat's room.

Peter Marshall: During the War of 1812, Captain Oliver Perry made the famous statement, "We have met the enemy and..." What?
Paul Lynde: They are cute.

Peter Marshall: Burt Reynolds is quoted as saying, "Dinah (Shore)'s in top form. I've never known anyone to be so completely able to throw herself into a..." A what?
Paul Lynde: A headboard.

Peter Marshall: In the "Wizard of Oz," the lion wanted courage and the tin man wanted a heart. What did the scarecrow want?
Paul Lynde: He wanted the tin man to notice him.

Peter Marshall: What do you call a man who gives you diamonds and pearls?
Paul Lynde: I'd call him "darling"!

Peter Marshall: Paul, can anything bring tears to a chimp's eyes?
Paul Lynde: Finding out that Tarzan swings both ways!

Oh My God Paljoey!!!! Thanks for posting these. HILARIOUS! You realize this show could never be broadcast today on network tv. Some of the things they got away with was so over some people's heads & so ahead of its time!

Peter Marshall: True or False -- are you all right Paul?
Paul Lynde: Just spit it out. (audience laughing)
Peter Marshall: A recent hearing in New Jersey, opponents of fluorinated water argue that too much fluorine in a persons system can cause an uncontrollable desire for sex?
Paul Lynde (shouting): HEY CULLIGAN MAN!
