>> would that be kennedy's war or johnson's war that they passed off onto tricky dick? and if vietnam was nixon's war, will that make iraq the next president's war?

Probably not, since this was so clearly a great big ol' Bush Production. And just because Nixon was so stupid not to realize the futility of Vietnam certainly doesnt excuse his actions on it while in office. He could have gotten us out at any time. He chose not to; in fact he escalated it to the same absurdity as Bush's foray into Otehr Parts Of The World We Should Just Freaking Leave Alone.

Further, if you do a little remedial history, you'll know we were started sending troops there back in 1954, so we *could* call it Eisenhower's war that Kennedy and Johnson inherited.

Huh? Nixon ended both the war and the draft, and continually ordered major troop withdrawals. He also lowered the voting age to 18. All things I remember, vividly.

since american military mission was established and advisors went there in '50 along with $15m in military aid for the frogs we could also call it truman's war.

But back to your point Papa. Democrats will be blamed for this Iraq mess.

BUT it will be SO MUCH FUN to see how FAST the Republicans completely distance themselves from Iraq once a Democratic President is in charge. My guess is they will be demanding he get us out of Iraq while President Obama is still thinking about what color the new oval office rug should be.

I am sorry that the people you elected have let you down. I guess you'll have to elect 'em again as the lesser of two evils.

If Tom DeLay is The Hammer, then I proclaim a new title for the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi: The Briber. Nancy Pelosi had to bribe her members with spinach to get their votes.

Because he had no other choice. By then it was patently obvious that Vietnam was a failed enterprise, but he have it his best shot and implemented his own version of a "surge" before finally throwing in the towel. The final years of Vietnam were messy and ugly, just as they are in Iraq now.

BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Sorry, no. That was considered the *first* Indochina war, which we fought along side France as part of our SEATO treaty obligation. If it has a parallel today, it would be Desert Storm the Prequel back in 90. What we call the Vietnam war actually started as the *second* Indochina war, initiated in 1954.

Hey HD: enlisted yet? C'mon, bud: your country *needs* you.

Nixon ran his campaign on ending the draft and war. He began troop withdrawals, as soon as he possibly could.

interesting how that money and advisors in 1950 could have been part of a treaty (seato) that was not even in existence until 1954. would ya like to go for double jeopardy where the scores can really pile up?

Well, you're right -- but only to a point. From Wikipedia: "By 1949, however, the United States became concerned about the spread of communism in Asia, particularly following the end of the Chinese Civil War, and began to strongly support the French as the two countries were bound by the Cold War Mutual Defense Programme." (my emphasis)

In other words, we got involved because of treaty entanglements. But that doesnt change the FACT that what we call the Vietnam War (or, as the Pentagon refers to it, the Vietnam Policing Action) was a separate incident from the one you cite.

Any more tap dancing questions about history you'd like to dance around?
