What better to follow Avatar in 3D than the remake of the Jaws spoof Piranha! I don't know if anyone saw the original, but it's horrible. Surprising, I know.
While most might find this remake ridiculous and painfully unnecessary, I am absolutely thrilled! Especially knowing that Eli Roth took part in it. Not a fan of the trailer, but I am anxious for this movie to come out and have been for a while. Here's hoping it's better than the 1978 disaster.

I'm sure if Eli Roth is involved it will be worse than the original.

I hear that Richard Dreyfuss is basically playing his role from Jaws in this.

I saw a trailer for this when I saw Avatar and it looks really really bad. I kinda want to see it just to laugh at it. The trailer made it look so pointless and almost like a satire.

Kelly Brook promoting the film on Attack of the Show:

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

I know not everyone will agree, but in my mind Alexandre Aja can do no wrong. Though this movie does look a little ridiculous, I really can't wait to see it. At least it's one movie (well, one movie other than The Final Destination) that makes no qualms about exploiting the whole 3D craze (though I believe it was set to be in 3D long before Avatar reignited the 3D flame) and making it fun. Most movies act like they are using it to enhance their film-making, but here it seems like it's going to be all part of the screams and laughs.

I'm ecstatic about this movie. Oh, I have no doubt it will be ridiculous but that's going to be the best part!

Piranha 3-D

The only thing I remember about the original film was that a great deal of it was filmed at Aquarena Springs in San Marcos, Texas. It was one of our family's favorite summer vacation spots when I was little and it truly was a fun and beautiful little park featuring glass-bottom boats, the underwater Aquamaids, Ralph the swimming pig (who made a notable appearance on To Tell the Truth), dancing chickens, Sky Spiral, Swiss Sky Ride and the Old Mill. The park opened in 1928 and reached its heyday in the 50s and 60s, but the way it deteriorated in the 80s and 90s was just so depressing. It was recently taken over by the local University as a research and training facility for wetland and wildlife conservation as well as scuba training. The glass-bottom boats are pretty much the only original attraction of the park still in use and I think the Sky ide and Sky Spiral structures are still standing around all rusted and dilapidated, waiting to be demolished since the park's closure in 1996.

The original was re-released today on dvd and BD after being out of print for a while (they are re-releasing all the old Corman "classics" this year). I can not wait to watch it!

And like JohnPopa I am totally there for the 3-D version on opening weekend. Love Aja as a director and love a good fun time at the movies.

Actually, Spielberg himself was quite fond of PIRAHNA which led to him collaborating with Joe Dante on TWILIGHT ZONE and GREMLINS.

I'm the opposite of mormonphobic. I don't think Alexandre Aja has a single successful film to his name. Talented, but hopelessly prone to shoot himself in the narrative foot.

EDIT: Oh, watched the trailer. Funny, it's been eleven years since Jan De Bont's turd sandwich remake of THE HAUNTING proved that CG effects are not even remotely scary. Hollywood still hasn't gotten the memo, apparently.

Ebert must have been having a bad day when he watched the original film. He didn't seem to get any of the humor or in-jokes.
