Glad to see Merriweather Post Pavilion at the top! I'm not at all surprised. Also not surprised to see the glorious Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest high on this list. I had that going all summer long. Atlas Sound - Logos should be higher.
Recently turned on to Memory Cassette and Real Estate and am mighty impressed. I have been spinning Neon Indian like crazy, and agree completely with Pitchfork's assessment of the album's staying power.
There are a bunch of things I would like to check out, namely, Woods.

Posted: 12/18/09 at 1:21pmI have 2 out of 50. A new record low for me. Thanks, Pitchfork.

Posted: 12/18/09 at 11:25pmI've only heard of 5 of those artists. But hey, it's nice to know that Bon Iver has a new album. I love the one I have.

It's just weird they didn't include Mission of Burma's new one.
I do love the Bear in Heaven and Passion Pit cds.

Posted: 12/19/09 at 5:08pmI'm of the "Die Pitchfork, Die" party, but it does touch my heart to see The Flaming Lips, Yo La Tengo, and Dinosaur Jr. fer cryin' out loud on any Best Of list.
re: Pitchfork Media's top 50 albums#5
Posted: 12/19/09 at 5:13pmI know, Pitchfork is a definite approach/avoidance conflict.

I only mustered about a few songs from Yo La Tengo (can't beat a group with a name of a '62 Mets reference) and The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs (not even their best work imo).
The greatest music of this decade is by mostly white, snarky, hipster-ridden groups who all live in Brooklyn according to the media making these lists from Pitchfork to the AV Club to Rolling Stone.

Posted: 12/21/09 at 1:56pmThe best music is coming out of Sweden and Brooklyn, yeah, what of it? I don't get the Pitchfork hatred, honestly, they have turned me on to some great music and helped me find artists similar to ones I liked previously. Plus, they have some good writers and their summer music fest is incredible (a great value, too!).

I have two of those (the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Mos Def) and have heard of maybe ten. I need to step up my game, apparently.

^So true.

Posted: 12/21/09 at 7:29pmYeah, I have three (the Bon Iver EP, and Phoenix and Yeah Yeah Yeahs albums -- really recommend the two former). Which, come to think of it, is better than I've done in most recent years. Oh, Pitchfork. Making indie music lovers everywhere feel inadequate.

I don't care enough about Pitchfork to want it to die or anything, but come on. They make a list of the top 200 albums of the past decade and don't find room for something as obvious as Back to Black?
Yes, I know, how terribly mainstream of me, but that album is freaking fantastic, and I'd put it right up there with my New Pornographers, Bon Iver, and Blind Pilot. (Actually, Blind Pilot isn't on any of their lists, either. I think 3 Rounds and a Sound is pretty wonderful, myself, but I never claimed to be very cool in these matters. Maybe Portland is insufficiently Brooklynesque?)

I don't get the Pitchfork hatred
Pitchfork is the epitome of a scene. Whether you like it or not, I don't get not getting the hatred.
It can get frustrating when you're looking for some real dynamic indie rock or indie pop and you can only seem to find ambient indie whisperings. Plus, I'm pretty sure that all the albums I love that exist under their umbrella have all gotten lukewarm reviews. Really really pretentious lukewarm reviews.
I only like pretentious things with a modicum of self awareness. I think Pitchfork is probably too earnest for me.

Posted: 12/22/09 at 10:39amTo be honest I never heard of Pitchfork Media before this, I was just commenting on the general rankings of 'albums of the decade'.

hmmm, I guess I see your point, especially considering Back to Black as someone pointed out. I guess I just look at Pitchfork as being a music review site with a mission that's different from others. They are emphasizing indie acts, and smaller labels, while staying current with the mainstream.
I guess since they've turned me on to copious amounts of good music over the year, have provided me with interesting music news and interviews, PLUS they curate one hell of a summer music fest...I can't begrudge them.
But, I get it. People think they're pretentious.
