Planning my trip to New York

Ok I am planning a trip to New York for October, and I am trying to go as cheap as possible. I have recently discovered hostels and wondered if anyone has had any experience with them. I know hotels are pretty expensive in New York. Would I be better off if I am going with about four people to go to a Hostel or a Hotel? I know you have to be 21 to get a hotel room, but what about a hostel? I am thinking of going as cheaply as possible. I'll either Greyhound it, to get there, or I'll see if my uncle who is pretty high up in Northwest Airlines can get me some deals or point me in the direction of some deals. The idea is cheap but with good security. I have found a site that rates them (hostels), and there is even one right in the theatre district, any opinion or ideas of how to get cheap tickets to plays or musicals, cheap transportation from Indiana to New York, cheap housing, basically the idea is to spend the least amount of money possible so I can spend the rest of the money on plays and musicals. Also should I get a metro card or take the taxi,(busses) (Metro sounds better because its cheaper, or just walk a lot. I want to start planning this out here in the next few weeks so any help would be appreciated. (This will be my first time to New York so any advice would be appreciated.) Anything is appreciated!Planning my trip to New York

The only thing I can tell you is that I booked both of my trips on Expedia.com

I was able to pick the flights and hotel that fit my budget. I also bought a couple of "extras". Like being picked up at the airport and taken to the hotel, back to the airport after my trip, the Hop/On Hop/Off bus tour and the 7 attraction pass to see the sites in NYC. It was just over a thousand. Not bad considering I also got a non stop flight up and back and it's for 5 nights/6 days.

Haha thanks ififloat. I'll keep that in mind DofB but remember we're talking about poor college kids here, I'll have to do the math and figure out what the best way to go is.

Dof, what hotel are you staying at? I'm staying at the Edison this time.

Son,the last couple of times I went, I picked my intinerary from expedia.com, then took it to a travel agent to see if I could get a better deal. I've saved a couple hundred dollars that way. Sometimes it's cheaper to fly from Louisville.

I wouldn't suggest getting show tickets for the same day you arrive in NYC. Last time I was scheduled to arrive in Newark at 2pm, I had a five hour delay at the Indy airport and missed a show.

You might want to do some research using the Lonely Planet guide. Lonely Planet is targeted toward young people who want to travel cheaply. Their website is www.lonelyplanet.com. You can also get their New York City guide book from bookstores or amazon.com.

Thanks Lassy, when I went to D.C. in 8th grade we drove down to Louisville, and flew to D.C. from there because it was cheaper. I had forgotten about that.

i have no idea on hostels vs. hotels. but get yourself a metrocard, it's a value. how long are you going to be in town for? if you're in for the weekend, just get like a $10 or $15 dollar card, but if you're going to be in for four days or more and plan to travel a lot by subway or bus, get yourself a one week unlimited card for $21. you can use it as much as you like, but the catch is that once you use it, it's dead for 18 minutes (to avoid one person buying a card and allowing all of nyc to ride for free).

check jetblue and airtran for cheap flights, i regularly can get airtran round trips from laguardia to ohio for $108 + taxes and airport fees (and that's a non-stop flight too). airtran has always been quite prompt and usually gets me to my destination ahead of time. weird, i know. the only reason i advocate trying to find a cheap flight is that greyhound will be at least an 18 hour ride guaranteed and likely longer from indiana. it may be cheaper, but it will cut into your actual time spent in the city of you're on a schedule.

you might want to check outer borough hotels as well. i believe there's a day's inn and an econo-lodge in sunnyside. while you wouldn't be in manhattan, you'd be 20 minutes away by subway. just be careful if you look at outer boroughs not to put yourselves somewhere that's innaccesible by public transportation because cabs will eat your money faster than ms. pacman going after the ghosties.

ok, that's my insight for the morning...must get coffee.

Look into Radio City Apartments (radiocityapartments.com). I've stayed there a few times in a studio for less than $100 with a discount through my American Express Gold Card and using a coupon from the Paint the Town site. They also have 1 and 2 bedroom apartments> With a kitchenette, you can save money on food. It's conveniently located near Times Square at 49th near 7th. TKTS booth is nearby for cheap tickets. Use free computers at the Times Square Visitors Center across the street from TKTS.

Honestly, I would say hostels are the way to go. If you love meeting new people and you are traveling alone, it's a great way to travel. This past November I stayed at the Wanderers Inn and absolutely loved it! The people were awesome! It was 25 bucks a night for a bed and it was totally worth it! If you don't like the idea of dorm-mates they also have privates. This particular hostel is linked to two others-The Cheslea International Hostel, and the Manhattan Inn(the newest, which actually has private bathrooms in every dorm room). If you go to www.chelseahostel.com, it will give you great informaiton about that particular place plus a link to the other two hostels. All three hostels websites are extremely informative and you can book a room from them without having to pay any extra booking fees. They are all really close to the subway, and have a really nice free breakfast plus Pizza one night a week! Enjoy your stay!!!
