WASHINGTON - Capitol Police dropped a charge of unlawful conduct against antiwar activist Cindy Sheehan on Wednesday and apologized for ejecting her and a congressman's wife from President Bush's State of the Union address for wearing T-shirts with war messages.
Police removed Sheehan and Beverly Young, wife of Rep. C.W. "Bill" Young, R-Fla., from the visitors gallery Tuesday night. Sheehan was taken away in handcuffs before Bush's arrival at the Capitol and charged with a misdemeanor, while Young was not arrested.
Capitol Police did not explain why Sheehan was arrested and Young was not. However, Capitol Police Chief Terrance Gainer was asking the U.S. attorney's office to drop the charge against Sheehan, according to Deputy House Sergeant of Arms Kerri Hanley.

so now offending tradition is a crime?
Goth , please chime in...
edit: and Beverly Young had a t-shirt which said "support our troops." Should the police be out arresting every single american with those idiotic ribbons on their cars?

As if this would have happened but for the other woman not being removed, but not arreasted for wearing a pro-troop T-Shirt. It is only that they got caught treating the two differently that this even happened.
EDIT - I typed too quickly!

Me? Is my name Roscoe?
I'm invoking Godwin's law and leaving this fine thread. I'm glad the police had the decency to apologize for overreacting to Sheehan's shirt, but I'm not going to sit here and listen to the same old tired (and historically ignorant) Nazi "analogies".

Posted: 2/1/06 at 9:47pmthe apology came because of the disparity in the treatment of the two women who were removed because of their t-shirts.

Godwin's Law-
Godwin's Law (also Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies) is an adage in Internet culture originated by Mike Godwin on Usenet in 1990 that states:
As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.
There is a tradition of protocol in many Usenet newsgroups that once such a comparison is made, the thread in which the comment was posted is over and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever debate was in progress.
It is considered poor form to arbitrarily raise such a comparison with the motive of ending the thread. There is a widely recognized codicil that any such deliberate invocation of Godwin's Law will be unsuccessful

Thank you; that was very enlightening. Not.
We're not on Usenet, so in order to sarcastically state the general invalidity of this particular Nazi reference, I had to invoke Godwin's law. I bent protocol. Forgive me, for I have sinned.
ETA- I was a bitch and can't take that back, but I apologize for it and for misinterpreting chita's post.
