re: Pope asks where God was in Auschwitz horror

Dolly I will be at Auschwitz in July.
I've been to Dachau, I've been Bergen-Belsen, so I know the feeling. This man should know that question was inappropriate, and certainly NOT worthy of front page news as it was on my local paper.

I tried linking an article from Netscape but it didn't work. If the whole article is read, the Pope's faux pas wasn't as bad as the headlines are making it.

re: Pope asks where God was in Auschwitz horror

There are some questions of major theological import appearing in this thread.

I believe that God knew that in order for us to be in relationship with God, God had to back away and allow humanity to exercise free will. It would be extremely difficult for us to be in relationship with a God who "allowed" some people to survive the Holocaust, while most others perished. What would be God's justification for allowing certain people to live, and how could we choose to be in relationship with and worship a God like that?

"Now, do you want to talk about a loving and omnipotent God who requires that his Son undergo incredible pain, torture and death for the Redemption of the world? That boggles the mind!"

To this question, I offer that I don't believe God "required" this of Jesus. Jesus' execution by the state was a completely human failing. What God did do, however, was to take a situation that was intended by humans as evil and turned it into something good for all of humanity. (For a much better explanation of this idea, read the Friday chapter of THE LAST WEEK by Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan.)

Side Note:

Catholics take the entire Old Testimate and the Book of Revelations as completely symbolic. We Catholics especially do not believe in Adam/Eve. That's why Caholics stay out of the "evolutionary debate", because for all we know, there could have been evolution, a big bang, or whatever scientifically makes sense, we just believe that God sent it into motion.

Also the question, "As a conduit of God, shouldn't the Pope know where God was during the Holocaust" (paraphrasing) is kind of silly. Sorry but it is. It was definately a rhetorical question. Also, the Pope cant just pop up and say, "Hey God, I have a quesion for you. Let's chat". He's a coduit, not a buddy.

re: Pope asks where God was in Auschwitz horror

On Sunday at my church this whole question of "why does God allow suffereing" was discussed. The way it was explained and the way I believe is that God gave us free will so that we could choose to love Him. If He made us to love him then the love would be no more real than if we went into a toy section and picked up a doll with a pull sting that said "I love you". The love would be ingenuine and wouldn't mean anything, it would be lipservice. With that free will we are able to do good or bad and suffering comes from the bad choices and sin that we make/do or that others have made/done. These choices are like a water droplet in a pond. It may seem insignificant at first, but the effects ripple out indefinatly. God loves us, and cares for us, but for there to be a relationship we have to return that love. For those of us who believe in Christ and His death being the way to our redemption then when we die and go to Heaven then we will no longer suffer, there will be no pain, no fear, no death, etc... that is our promise from God. On earth we are not safe from pain or suffering, God never promised that. The suffering that we endure on earth teaches us compassion and empathy and helps us to remember to turn to God in bad times.
To a small child going to the doctor for a vaccination is a terrifing thing, but their parent takes them anyways. The parent lets the child suffer because the vaccination will protect them from future harm. The child doesn't know that at the time, all they know is that it hurts and that they are scared. We are like that child, we don't understand the reasoning for the pain that we are going through, but our parent, God, does understand and does know why we suffer. Like all things spiritual, it requires faith.
