I'm in gr.11 and I'm researching schools that I want to go to for university or college or what not. And I have my heart set on musical theatre training. I want to go to a school with a good program (I have some in mind) but to get into these good schools with the good musical theatre programs are you at a disadvantage if you don't go to a performing arts school?
heyyy....I'm going through the same thing as you...grade 11...everything....kinda stressful...honestly, I don't think that not being in a performing arts HS will hurt you that much. I mean, my experience with seeing kids from these schools is that it really depends on the individual. A lot of them don't really pick up on what they learn or don't really have the drive b/c all the training is just laid out for them...I spend a lot of time w/ private lessons on the side and my high school's drama department has really risen up- we have people comparing our shows to those of a performing arts high school's....so idk....honestly I just think that it always depends on the individual. At the same time, sometimes I wish that I got the acting or dancing training that these schools got...so idk.... PM me or something if you want to talk some more...what schools are you interested in?

hey there... i go to an incredible performing arts academy, and to be honest, since there are so few, it doesnt really hurt your chances if you DONT go. its if you DO go that MIGHT be an advantage. it sure as hell wont HURT you. ya see? keep up training.. doesnt matter HOW you get it.. just matters that you got it and keep it. :)
I too am in gr.11!
My counselor told me that as far as admissions go, it makes very minimal (if not no) difference if you went to a performing art school or not. You could be super talented and have attended public school.
However, the advantage comes with the fact that these kids have been raised in an environment that nurtures them on their talent, so they may be more prepared, and they probably know how to present themselves as well too. This doesn't mean that we public schoolers can't rise to their level though, it just may be a little more work for us!
