While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75-year old Texas rancher whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Sarah Palin and her bid to be a heartbeat away from being President .
The old rancher said, 'Well, ya know, Palin is a post turtle.'
Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a post turtle was.
The old rancher said, 'When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top. That's a post turtle.'
The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor's face, so he continued to explain. 'You know she didn't get up there by herself, she doesn't belong up there, she doesn't know what to do while she is up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put her up there to begin with’.
What a great analogy! Doesn't get any more simple than that!
What I find the most amusing about this is that the guy says it as if 'post turtle' is a common phrase. Do people in Texas really put turtles on fence posts to kill time?
I'll have to remember this one, though... that's great.
I've never seen a turtle on a fence post, but then again I've never been to Texas.
What I don't understand is how does one tennis shoe end up on the side of the highway all the time? I mean do people just decide to throw a shoe out the window while driving down 95?
Or are they asleep with their feet out the window, and one blows off in the wind?
In the suburbs where I live, you can't go more than a mile or two without seeing a shoe or two tied onto a phone line. I've never seen anyone actively throwing shoes onto a phone line, but they always seem to be up there somehow.
I think stray shoes are a self-generating phenomenon. They just grow where they have no earthly business being. As for post turtle... sounds like a desk rabbit!
"What's a desk rabbit?"
"I just made that up. But that's probably going to be what they start to call people like Roy. But Roy's not a desk rabbit, he's my best friend."

Thta joke was widely told about George W. Bush. It might have been origianlly written by Molly Ivins.

Yep it's Ivins- at least according to the Wikipedia.
"On President George W. Bush, she likened him to a Post Turtle."
God I miss her!

I've lived in Texas for 22 years, and never once have I seen a post turtle...or even heard of one.
The shoe thing...yes. I also occasionally see SNES controllers on them as well.

This joke's older than the hills, and certainly older than Molly Ivans.
"This joke's older than the hills, and certainly older than Molly Ivans."
But, it doesn't make it less funny or appropriate.
