This morning proved a challenge for me, as with most New Yorkers. I live just south of the "restricted" area and had to be down in the 20s by 9. I had planned to walk and/or eventually find a cab.
Instead of heading south, I walked a few blocks north where I immediately was face to face with a woman who had three people in her car and needed a fourth to get through the barrier - and she was going into the 20s.
So the four of us shared an experience this morning as we headed south. In the middle of what we are all experiencing, it was refreshing today to be a part of a positive experience.
The driver wouldn't accept any money and even asked the two of us left in the car at the end if we were planning to do the same thing tomorrow.
I'm trying to stay closer to work today.. but again I thought this was a "special" moment in which New Yorkers break the bad rep they sometimes are given.
I've read several similar stories as well. So - even though commuting today and until the strike is resolved will prove to be challenging - it isn't "all bad". I made a few new friends - if only for a few minutes...

The NYC schools delayed their openings until 10 AM. As I live in Suffolk County (Long Island), I left a little later than I usually do and stopped for gas and to visit an ATM. I made it to work in record time because there was almost no traffic on the Southern State Parkway.
At school we averaged a mere 5 students per class and in my 6th period 11th grade class we managed to read the whole first act of OUR TOWN--and the students asked intelligent questions about the play.
There's so much to be said about teaching students in small groups!
I almost enjoyed my job today.

Posted: 12/20/05 at 4:44pmWonderful story Craig. Hopefully this will be a very short lived strike. In the mean time, remember to dress in layers and comfy walking shoes are a must.

Posted: 12/20/05 at 6:57pmI managed to get a ride to school, and basically did nothing all day. Scheduling was really messed up and I had a full hour of Latin, where the teacher was convinced that inspite of half the class not being present we should move ahead to the next lesson (even though our particular Latin class is like ahead of all his others).

My wife drives me in. I sit in alittle coffee shop ( near a radiator) have breakfast & read newspapers until I come in
She than picks me up at night . She goes to her job in between. They could stay out forever as I could care less. I do hope it is over soon but Toussant sounds stubborn bordering on insanity

Day 2:
Went to the same area and was again blessed by a car that needed a 4th. Three Wall Street guys who told me that the trading flood is running at 98-99 percent normal because apparently they have a zero tolerance (or close to it) policy about not showing up and using the strike as an excuse.
It was at least nice to hear that the stock market (in terms of trading.. not #s) was operating as usual. I would hate to think that this strike was going to dramatically affect the rest of the country/world more than it has to.

Day 2:
Second day of my "transit strike" vacation. I slept late again today. At the momemt, I'm baking bisquits. This afternoon, I'm planning to do a little Christmas shopping. If I get lazy, I'll just do what I did yesterday: stay home and watch movies.

well, it was one night after coming home from Club Krash.
This was back in the days when the club was on Steinway Street in Astoria, Queens.
Well, anyway to make a long story short I took the N train into the city to then switch to the D train uptown to The Bronx. I was living on Fordham Road at the time.
Anyway I was riding in the last car and at the 161St and River Avenue station this fine ass papi steps into the car.
Well, we start making mad eye contact..our eyes literally undressing each other.
It was the dead of summer and there was no a/c in the car and it was hot and it was only getting hotter in there.
He came toward me and at that point I....
Oh snap. My bad. You guys wanted commuting stories pertaining to the Transit strike.

Posted: 12/21/05 at 9:40amNo. I'm not a striker, RobbO. My boss just understands that it would be impossible for me to commute to and from work without public transportation. My commute is a nightmare even when the buses and trains are running normally. I'm not expected back until the strike is over. But, I have vacation scheduled for next week anyway. So, If the strike isn't settled by Friday, I won't be back in the office until January 3.

I had a rdie to school yesterday, and pretty much did nothign because nobody showed up.
Today I stayed home, but I just received a phoen call saying that my school's holiday concert (which I'm performing in) was cancelled for tonight, and currently has no reschedule date.
