The words "pretentious" and "self indulgence" have been brandied about lately when describing art and this has me somewhat concerned. Usually what they are critiquing is merely original or deep and thus they resort to a word like "pretentious" to make themselves seem hip and smart, while they do hate the object in question.
But this raises an issue.
Isn't ALL art pretentious? All music, films, books, and paintings are ALL pretentious. They are forcing you to spend several minutes of your life imbibing, and then later thinking about, them.

Well, robbiej's shows have done a great job of breaking banality!
And, I'm sure there have been others who have done brilliant jobs.
But, if I were to actually create something new and thrilling--I'll gladly take the credit. Though robbie will prob cut me.

Jrb, try to hang outside one night - when all the doors are open and regular people hear the crap being shated out like exlax - they are laughing - laughing - at what they are hearing...what people forget it is, there is a GREAT BIG WORLD outside this city and if one wants to work in it, one better stay away from those piano bars...
If they are laughing on Christopher Street they are gonna boo in Sheboygain!!
The upper room is closed so that's one good thing!!

Putting a show together is hard work, I applaud anyone who takes the time to create and share their talents, it's always the bitter bottom feeders who throw stone and shoot hollow arrows. Some people around here define "pretentiousness" and only seek attention by being negative. Good news is, that kind of manic shouting out of emotional windows is always transparent.
Mr. Voiceanth, you've got too many years of eye rolling queen under you're belt to ever be straight gurrlfriend! *SNAP* But you have nice arms, so I'll give you a pass!
