I was Baptized Catholic, but never attended services regularly. We usually only attended when my grandparents were present in a variety of cities and towns. In my experience, if you just show up for service and get in line, you get a cracker. It wasn't like you had to pass a test first or be deposed. This priest knew these people and agreed to do the service and then chose to humiliate the family during a time of grief. He shouldn't be allowed a cracker, either.

"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."

I think the Catholic Church will suffer a significant fracture in the not-too-distant future. There are far too many good Catholics who work for the poor, social justice, and equality for them to remain in the fold of the archaic, ultra-conservative establishment. Many priests and nuns live in the real world, rather than the 15th century of church leadership.
Wasn't the fracture the Reformation? With numbers like the 98% of Catholic women who have used birth control, to the claims that many (most?) Catholics are pro-gay marriage, etc, etc, it would seem if there was actually going to be a fracture, there'd be one. Instead, the supposed "good" Catholics just talk about how they like the tradition and the pageantry or how their own personal parish and/or priest aren't like that, etc. Until the so-called "good" or "enlightened" Catholics can look at their own hypocrisy and how their helps perpetuate the Church's ability to remain squarely in middle ages, I don't see how sweeping change within the church is possible.
I know, right? They could stand to use a little seasoning. They quickly melt and get all gummy. Then you sit there and try and scrape the Jesus stuck to your tongue with your teeth. I don't think that's what he had in mind during the last supper.
