"John J. Duran is looking at election results update. looks like Prop 8 did NOT pass in LA County. 50/50 with more ballots to count and hedging towards NO on 8"

It will either be overturned by the courts, or by a vote on the next election.

My primary interest is in the suits addressing the tax-exempt status of churches - but I can't find a source to follow that

Q, I don't know whether a lawsuit has been filed on that, or whether it is an internal act by the IRS that deals with the tax-exempt status.
