Just out of curiousity...I thought I'd ask other students...I don't go to a big named school. I mean, we have the best theater dept out of any of the colleges here, but we're not well known throughout the country. Do you that matters? Do you think somebody who grad. from Northwestern would get the part over me if we were auditioning for the same role? I mean I think i get a gread education here and I get more attention and more one on one w/ the department heads since its a smaller school. I think it always boils down to talent. However, if we both can hit the same notes and are equally talented, do you think they'd get the part over me because they're school is more recognizable?

yes and no. i wish it were that simple that it "boils down to talent." unforunately in this business, that is not true. it's just not. i think there was another thread here once that talked about "making it"...this is not too unlike that. it's a touchy subject really, and here's why i said yes and no:

YES - they might get the part over you not because they're more talented or you're less talented, but maybe, in a situation where the director's from Northwestern, to use your example. The director went to northwestern, knows the professor, knows the training program and what is expected of students there. he knows nothing about your school. he may pick this other person solely on the fact that he knows this person has had a certain work ethic drilled into them (which may or may not be the case). got it? sucks, but it happens.

NO - they might not get the part over you just because he went to school at a "name" school. it's really not that black and white. there are a million different reasons why someone gets a part over someone else. *shrug* it's really all about you and you're confidence in yourself. if you feel like you've gotten great training and you have the confidence, it may just shine through and touch a director.

what am i saying? i wish i knew. it's 2am! haha. but seriously, yes, a name can help sometimes. is it the deciding factor? sometimes. is it fair? no. but this business is anything but fair. it's not as easy as basing it on talent. a lot of it is who you know, where you've been, and being at the right place at the right time. maybe look at other options - you obviously love your school, and you're getting good training. so stay there for undergrad. maybe look at studying at a studio for the summer...look into summer intensive programs with yale, or brown, or northwestern or something. something that won't detract from the more intimate training you like, but something that will start you networking. (and it can't hurt to learn more skills, right?) or maybe look for something that will help you stick out too...like a puppetry course, or an intensive stage combat program...something, anything that makes YOU the more desireable hire!

(PHEW. i just rambled on WAY too long...but i hope something in that jumbled mess of a post made sense!)

I might just be bitter ,but I think if two are equally as talented then it boils down to looks. I'm a high school student from hick-town so you should probably ignore this message

I have NEVER met Cheyenne Jackson. I have never hung out with him in his dressing room, he did not tweet me, he never bought me a beverage, and he mostly certainly didn't tickle me. . .that is all.
