Don't you also need a television that is at least 1080p in order to be able to tell a noticable difference between the BlueRay and DVD?

I'm thinking about transitioning myself but my TV is 32" but only 720p, so it might not be worth it.

Currently, the highest HD in commercial release is 1080p (which will change as soon as the new 2K and 4K TVs hit the market). BD image maxes out at 1080p. With a 32" set displaying 720p, you will still see an improved picture. Standard DVD is 480p (or 480i) for NTSC playback.

And for those of you looking at "region free," keep in mind, any player you buy will also need a built-in PAL converter or an additional external conversion box or you still won't be able to watch PAL DVDs on your domestic (NTSC) TV sets.

With HD, there is no NTSC vs. PAL issue (thank God), so "region free" Blu-ray Discs will play on all players and all HDTVs.

Thanks for all the great advice and suggestions. I really appreciate it. The room I will be putting the TV in is approximately 10 feet by 12 feet. It's not that big of a room and that is why I am concerned that a 40" or 46" TV may be to overwhelming. Then again, I don't want to get a TV and regret not getting a larger size screen.

My brother has a Vizio HD TV and is very satisfied with it. Does anyone have a Vizio? If so, do you like it? They are not as expensive as a Sony but if the added cost is worth it, I would be willing to spend the extra money on a Sony.

Any opinions or advice?

My parents just bought a Vizio and they like it. You can get a 37", which is what they have.
