I just moved to LA from NYC, and took my two cats on a long (traumatic) flight. They are now confined to one room, which was advised for us to do, for a few days until they get used to the smells of the new area. My female looks about ready to explore the whole house, but the male seems extremely depressed and hardly mobile (he han't eaten or drank anything since he got here early this morning). Does anyone know how long this depression will last? Or should I worry?
you should try to get him to drink something. they can get dehydrated really easily. he's probably also overwhelmed by new scents. if the female's ready to explore, i don't think it could hurt letting her, although it might be better for the male if there's something familiar (the female) or whatnot. i'd just try to reassure him by petting and talking to him.
take him to the vet. the whole not moving thing could be from dehydration. that sounds exactly like what happened ot my cat as a kitten.
something you can also do to help calm them down is to place a t-shirt you've been wearing all day where they sleep... they will feel more comforted if they are sleeping near something with a familiar smell.
hope it all works out for them
My cats are sleeping in the liter box...I guess this is normal, considering it has a familiar smell. My male cat has come out of his space and is sniffing around, so that's god news.
that is good. i'm sure they'll be fine. just make sure there's water for them to drink.
glad he's coming around :) like midnight said, keep water out for them. my neighbor's cat hid under the bed for three dats after she brought him home (he's 4 and a rescue) but he was ok after a while.
