Question about Connecticut to NYC transportation

Question about Connecticut to NYC transportation#1

Posted: 6/29/08 at 10:45pm

Hey guys. I live in Massachusetts and ususally just take a bus in for a day trip to the city. The problem is that the bus leaves NYC at 7:00pm so I can only see one show in a day. For my next trip I'd like to drive to Connecticut and take a train into the city. I don't want to drive right into NYC and have to find parking. My question is where is the best place to go to take transportation into the city? How much does it cost? And will there be a train leaving the city late enough to be able to see a second show?

Thanks! :)

The cheapest and best place to take a train out from CT is New Haven. It's mad cheap. I've seen fares at $15. Your next best bet would be Hartford and that's a good $45-$60.

I always take the train from New Haven. It's called the Metro North east of Hudson line. You can't beat the price, though you will also have to pay to park your car at the station in New Haven (about $8, I think.) If you get on one stop closer to NYC, I believe the parking is free at that station.

The train takes you to Grand Central, as opposed to Amtrak, which takes you to Penn Stn.

The link below is to their site for maps, prices, tickets and times. I believe they run until about midnight on Saturdays anyway.

I also go to New Haven for the train. Parking is either $8 or $12. Round trip ticket is about $30, I believe.

Trains leave NYC on an hourly basis, and if I remember correctly, run until about 2 am, then stop for a couple of hours before starting up again. Plenty of time to see two shows, though (depending on the show and how quickly you move, you can make the 11:22 back to CT).

I live in Massachusetts too, just on the border of Connecticut, and I too take Metro North. I actually go all the way past New Haven to Westport and take the train from there. Parking is free there in all lots (even permit ones) on weekends, and round-trip off-peak to Grand Central is $21.50. I usually am able to book it back to Grand Central after an 8 PM evening show and make the 11:22 train home.

The link artscallion posted will let you figure out train schedules/times by picking your departure station and Grand Central as your destination.

Good luck!
