Could someone please fill me in on the news of the latest huricane?
I'm away at college and I'm concerned for my family who live in Orlando
My family is in Florida, and as of right now, it looks like it will cut across the Southern part of the state...Orlando schools are closed, but, it doesn't look like there should be significant damage around there.

Hi from Miami. It's more of a South Florida (East and West) storm. It should make landfall around Naples and cut through the southern part of the state. The north side of the storm (imagine it making a line from Naples to the east coast) will be the less severe side of the storm. However, the south side (Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade counties) will experience the rougher part of the storm. It is now up to 110 mph (cat 2), but may go up to a cat 3 before landfall.
I'm sure your family in Orlando will be fine.

I have been watching this hurricane very closely (perhaps too close)
My parents actually brought me back to the north the end of last week because of the threat of Wilma. Actually, yesterday I went to see Avenue Q. Anyway- I go to college in S. Florida (east coast)- near Ft. Lauderdale. As of 3 hours ago when I talked to my friend who was down there said that the county is flooded already and the hurricane didn't hit yet. There is no college on Monday and is yet to be determined for Tuesday. It is supposed to hit tomorrow in the morning and be a fast moving storm. It doesn't appear to be going in the Orlando direction but it's hard to say- (I don't think the weather people even know)
Hope everyone stays safe for this last English alphebet hurricane.
Alpha is somewhere out there but it doesn't looking threatening to the US.
EDIT: Just found out that there is no college on Tuesday either.

Our shutters went up today on our little house in Palm Beach.
I don't really understand how this storm is coming, though... Did it like, double back on itself? I'm so clueless.
And, I'm in New Jersey right now, but best wishes to those fo you who are in or have friends and family in Florida.

UM and FAU are closed on Monday and Tuesday. The only area that is flooded is Oakland Park. Miami is fine (for now) and the rest of Ft. Lauderdale has been reported to be OK (with the exception of Oakland Park).

Here's Wilma's track: http://www.weather.com/maps/news/atlstorm24/stormtrack_large.html?from=wxcenter_maps
It has been one VERY difficult storm to predict... they've been scaring us about it for too long!

bmeonbway2- although thats the track of Wilma, nothing is certain. The weather people have been prdicting this to have been in S. Floridy by Fri. or Sat. It's nature and although there is radar and whatnot- Wilma is going to go where she wants to go and not what the weather people predict.
Just like up North, the weather people tell you there is going to 15 inches of snow and when all is over and doen with, there is just a dusting.
But in a way, they have to somewhat over-react/prepare just to cover their butt so they don't get sued.
Thank you so much for everyone who responded!
I got a phone from my dad saying that high winds were approaching and he wanted to check over our hurricane emergency supply list with me (he remembered everything except filling up the bathtub)
I just so worried for my family and friends. I survived all 4 last year but I just can't help thinking "this is the one"
Thank you for the link bmeonbway2 and the rest of ya'll down there take care of yourselves and remember to fill your bathtubs

Thanks
We're in the midst of the storm now. It's like there is a fireworks show from our balcony.... but the fireworks are exploding transformers. They just announced that is going to get worse- our building is already swaying (it is built to do that).
I just posted the track b/c someone wasn't sure how "she" ended up where "she" is now. I don't think anyone was over-reacting at all.... especially when they normally evacuate Miami's barrier islands for just about every hurricane. I actually think they under-reacted for this one as far as evacuations go... hopefully we'll all be OK. We're lucky to have power right now- the skyline is dark.
The media has quite a challenge with these storms- create awareness without inciting mass hysteria. When I said scaring us.... when you live in a area that is susceptible to hurricanes, just seeing a tropical system in the ocean is enough to make you nervous. The media have done a fine job, as have the meteorologists.
