A great talent has left us.
Next to Bernard Hermann, Jarre was the most influential film composer in cinematic history (IMO, of course).
He will be missed.

All the good ones are gone. Film music today all sound the same (like Hans Zimmer) Is Ennio Morricone and John Barry still alive? We lost Jerry Goldsmith and Elmer Bernstein around the same time. Thank God John Williams is still here.
I love the music in Lawrence in Arabia and even the music in GHOST was great. He will be missed.

I agree. There was this trend toward minimalism in the early 90s.
It was refreshing at first, but I long for a sweeping orchestral score. Critics claim these are manipulative and create ersatz emotion.
I always enjoyed being manipulated!

Agreed, M. Jarre's scores are splendid, some of the best ever.
There's always Danny Elfman, who can still do great stuff when the mood strikes him.

Imagine Lawrence of Arabia without that score
A great loss.

I love his music. I worked on the Blu-ray/DVDs for Lawrence of Arabia and A Passage to India not that long ago, and did the sound design for both. I got to "escape" into the music both times while I was looking for appropriate tracks.
I was especially taken with his score for Passage. I know he won the Oscar for it (one of three), but it's not a widely-known film score. It's absolutely beautiful!

And thanks for taking us on "incredible journeys" through your music.

Posted: 3/30/09 at 7:41pmThe score for LAWRENCE OF ARABIA is probably my favorite movie score of all time. May he rest in peace, with our thanks for his great talent.

I actually used to listen to the LP of Doctor Zhivago a lot back in the day.
The score of Lawrence of Arabia is as unforgettable as its cinematography.
Maurice Jarre made great contributions to film and to music. And he also gave the world two sons who have enriched the arts for future generations. How lovely.
Thanks for posting this, Taz. And merci, M. Jarre.

Certain composers scores had a certain sound. Bernard Herrman, Dimitri Tiomkin & Jarre.
I believe he also scored Ryans Daughter.

Posted: 4/1/09 at 2:40pmMaurice Jarre was one of those rare film composers whose music was inseparable from the film. You couldn't think of the music without thinking of the film, you couldn't think of the film without thinking of the music.
