This just isn't what I wanted it to be about.
I thought 'they' were dead.
Oh, well.

It's very sad whenever a cat passes away.
I'm quite sure he left his mark - in fact, many of them - on the White House during his stay.

I know JG.
I guess he was Chelsea's and neither one of them had time to care for him after they left.

Posted: 2/21/09 at 1:28amMy little sister had a friend whose cat was similarly colored and also named Socks. She wrote to President Clinton and sent him a picture of her cat Socks. He sent her back a picture of Socks that he had signed. I was about 9 years old at the time and thought that was so cool.
Wanting life but never knowing how

Posted: 2/21/09 at 1:41amWe had a black and white cat named Socks in my family, too. I never got a personalized letter from the president, though. But I did get one from Jason Priestley once. It was back in my 90210-obsessed days. I mailed him a fan letter and he sent back an autographed postcard. Though my siblings still insist it was a stamped autograph. But I think they were just jealous that Brandon wrote to me. Haters!

I met Socks once.
A group of us were waiting for the President with diver Greg Louganis, who was on the book tour for the memoir in which he revealed he was HIV positive.
They told us the president would be another hour, and it ended up being almost two. Mrs Clinton stopped by to meet Greg, then Mrs Gore, then they took us on a tour of the West Wing. The rest of us were fascinated just to be there, but it was 1995 and the CDC had put Greg on a blind protocol for what turned out to be the new protease inhibitors, and the massive doses exhausted him.
Mrs Currie said that the President was still detained with some Japanese businessmen, but he really wanted to meet Greg, who was getting tired and cranky. Mrs Currie knew that Greg was an animal person--he raised and trained show dogs--so she said, "Well, Greg, I think there's one more member of the White House staff who'd like to meet you," and she brought Socks in--on a leash! Apparently they couldn't let him wander around the White House unleashed because he would hide. Socks immediately took to Greg and jumped in Greg's arms like a dog would, and the two of them were purring until the President was ushered in, with staff arranging who should stand where and photographers clicking.
And that's how I came to have a picture of myself in the Oval Office with Greg Louganis holding Socks. It's framed on the wall of my office.
