For how long? Yes, they say in the article that this has a "finality" to it. But, we'll see about that.

Only once, in the official DC universe. Don't ask me about all the parallel ones. Marvel has been doing this like crazy lately (Nightcrawler just, err, crawled back from the dead after four years.) Does anyone care anymore? It was a big deal when Jean Grey/Phoenix died, only to come back four years later, in the 80s, but now it's become so routine. I wish these companies could come up with big stories that weren't centered around the 'death' of a fave character.

A friend who is a huge superhero comic geek got insulted when I compared them to daytime soap operas. But really, they have all of the same issues. A dwindling audience due to other, often better, entertainment options. Convulated storylines that are hopeless for any "newbie" to get into. Periods of good material when a talented writer gets onboard, only to often have a less talented writer come afterwards and 'retcon' all of that. And a reliance on things like evil doubles, and back from the dead stories (which also didn't become a soap opera thing until the mid 80s--before that the few times a character did come back from the dead it was genuinely a shock.) I guess, to be fair, both genres are seen as the pulp, and bottom of the barrel of their respective industries and strive to be considered better.

Didn't Marvel say they'd kill someone off every quarter? This...isn't actually good storytelling.

Marvel 'killed off' Peter Parker before the Superior Spider-Man but he has come back. Superheroes don't tend to stay dead for long. DC at least have let dead characters stay dead for a long period of time, Barry Allen was dead for almost 20 years while Hal Jordan while not killed off was turned into a villain then became The Spectre before returning to Green Lantern,
