Awoke to REDS on one of the HBO channels.
Forgot how good this film is.
Like it?

It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story... AGATHA CHRISTIE, Life magazine, May 14, 1956

One of my favorite films EVER.
Diane Keaton deserved an Oscar for her performance.

I have little recollection of it, except a visual of Beatty and Keaton meeting in some terribly crowded space.

I don't recall disliking it however it left no lasting impression on me.

I remember the curtain coming down (yes I'm old enough to remember when movie theaters really were like theaters) and feeling relieved that the cinematic torture was finally over, only to be horrified that it was only the intermission.

Then, about 3 1/2 hours into it, my ex-wife, then my girlfriend, decides she wants to leave. I looked at her incredulously, saying "we sat this long through this god-awful movie, and now you want to leave? We suffered this long, we can suffer a bit more!!!"

Loved it! Although I can easily see why some people would be bored by it. Think it is much better if you know about socialist politics in the early 1900s America and the Russian revolution. The movie was based on John Reed's book Ten Days That Shook The World, which I had read before the movie came out. But I really enjoyed the entire story, especially the complicated love story between John and Louise Bryant. Also liked that Eugene O'Neill was portrayed in the movie. I'm going to have to see this again to see if holds up for me.

Thanks for reminding us. When it came out, it was the event of the year (remember the impact of all those "witnesses," who spoke to the camera? A trick never attempted before.) It is almost never invoked these days, for mysterious reasons. It's worth a revisit.

And I saw it at the old Loews Astor Place, the below-ground theater under the Minskoff gone as of THE VILLAGE. And I remember the actor Keith Gordon (DRESSED TO KILL) who later became a director, sat in front of me! Memories!

I've always liked it. I think I first saw it at The Ziegfeld Theatre. Very well done film and one couldn't ask for better subject matter.
I remember seeing John Reed's name on one of the walls at the Kremlin. He is buried there.
In the credits I noticed that Alexander Kerensky is played by Oleg Kerensky. Anyone know for sure if Oleg is Alexander's son?
