Anyone else remember Jody, the male bimbo before his time in the Frankie and Annette catalogue? It's startling to read that he was 74 when he died. It means that he was playing the rudderless party boy in his late 20s. (Which in light of Seth Rosen America, proves as an iconic portrait of the ambition free deadbeat, he really was ahead of his time).
His character was initially called "Deadhead," and then evolved into "Bonehead."
"A great thing about Jody," Frankie Avalon told The LA Times this week, "was he was just a real fine gentleman and a lot more talented than he really got out of the career of being an actor. He was very bright, and he created this character that was kind of the dummy and, of course, he was the opposite of that."
Recalling the much taller McCrea, Avalon said, "He was a well-built, real athletic-looking guy, and he really was a surfer: He'd get on that board and surf."
"I'm a comedian, but in my spare time, things bother me." Garry Shandling
