The technical term for it in sociology is aversive racism/sexism.
Statistically it explains why the age gap remains so wide between women and people of color and white men. The more education, the higher up a woman or person of color rises -- the large the pay differential between them and their white male counterparts.

This is the paradigm many academics use to explain why the Fortune 500 is comprised of less than 5% of women, and people of color, why even though women are 50.8& of the population they are less than 18% of Congress and why in 2008 the two Democratic frontrunner's in the Presidential election cannot seem to escape from the generalizations about race and gender.

"I'm a one-eyed Mormon Democrat from conservative Arizona, and you can't have a higher handicap than that." ~The ever-great and fabulous Morris K. Udall.
