The 1st gentleman of jazz has passed. What a career! What a life! Memento Mori.
Corine and others are paying our respect to him on the off-topic board.

I think Ray would have enjoyed just one thread in his honor...

As an original member of the Sick Jerk Club (on another message board, in a universe far, far away), I DO see the humor. In your darkest hour, sometimes humor can be your one saving grace. Even if it's sick humor.
"In your darkest hour, sometimes humor can be your one saving grace"
I think that applies only to those who are close to the deceased and are feeling a personal loss. I would bet that not one person on this baord was a family member or close friend to Ray Charles and therefore cannot use the "humor to relieve pain and grief" defense. We can all sincerely say it's a sad loss that Mr Charles has passed on because he was a great entertainer and contributed much to the world of music. However, I doubt that anyone here can honestly claim it is their darkest hour.
It was a very distasteful joke and perhaps the person posting didn't think of that. It would now be a getsure of maturity if the poster cleared the message from the board.

I wasn't specifically connecting 'one's darkest hour' with the death of Ray Charles, whom I believe was a truly wonderful artist who gifted us all with some amazing works. I was thinking of times in my life when things were really hard and tough, but my sense of humor remained intact. I agree that in those times, I wouldn't have necessarily appreciated sick humor, unless it came from me. I still think the OP's line was pretty funny, and since Ray Charles lived a rich and relatively long life, I don't even think it was in particularly bad taste. However, since I'm sure we'll never agree about this topic, I'll drop it.
