Recent college graduate needing help

I recently graduated with a theatre/performance degree. I'm in the process of the making the big move to NYC and before I do I would like to update my audition book. I'm a 5'2 character actress with mezzo soprano/belter range. I was recently told that I shouldn't sing songs from roles that I'll never play. So, I'm having a hard time finding something that showcases my vocal talent and my "character". Any advice? Any help would be appreciated! Thank you all in advanced!
