Is anyone REALLY reading this? I saw it in the new non fiction section, and it caused an uproar of laughter from others near me.

There was no way we could even get close to where they were Boobs. Besides - I would have slapped miss Bass silly - I have had it bad for Reichen for a while now!...

I mean, really, Lance was a celebrity 10 years ago, and Reichen was on the Amazing race.
why are people still watching them?

This is why it might interest some people, Liverpool:
Book Description
Reichen Lehmkuhl was playing the role of his life while in the Air Force. Not wanting to face a court martial for being gay, he had to live in a world where he had to watch everything he did and said for fear of being outed; and in another world where he was free to be himself. “One of the hardest things for me to reconcile was the fact that I was completely open with my family and friends but faced the very real possibility of being court martialed and going to jail if I was open with my 'work' colleagues.” As Reichen explains, “The don’t ask don’t tell policy is so contradictory to what the Air Force and all the armed forces stand for ... but they force you to lie in order to serve your country.” It was the contradictions which led Reichen to leave the Air Force once he completed his commitment.

Yes Bso - I have always found Reichen hot - it's not a secret. It does not mean that his book is any good. This is the exchange I witnessed at the store -
1st boy: (referring to stack of books on floor) "Who's That? He's cute!"
2nd boy: "It's Lance Bass's boyfriend".
3rd boy: "..and THAT got him a book deal?"
Laughter.
After discussing the Matlovich story on the coming out thread - and even "Serving in Silence" as an optional read - I wonder if he really has anything new to add, or if he is just riding out his celebrity status as some in the community have discussed.
So I guess the answer to my original question would be no - no one here has actually read it.

Posted: 10/12/06 at 11:44amIt's very sad that the same people on this board who scream about the unfairness of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, are so completely unsupportive as to be negative toward one of us who actually lived with that issue and was forced out.

Well, thank god we have craploads of other gay servicemen writing more quality books to fill the void.

Not yet, but I plan to, of course.
So you believe the policy is fair.

I'm just confused by the supposed encounter of three young gay boys reacting to seeing the book because I don't know a single gay boy under 30 who doesn't seem to spend their time enraptured by every reality series on television.

As someone who was drummed out of the military for being gay - and having lived through the horribly inept way it was handled - I don't think there can be enough books written on this subject. I wish EVERY person would write about their personal experience. This country needs to know that if every gay person left the military at once, we'd all be in BIG trouble (especially the Navy.)
If this man's particular story reaches someone just because of his entertainment connection, so be it - the end result might be one more person who possibly learns something. And I just can't see that as a bad thing.

Posted: 10/12/06 at 12:27pmI don't really get what the big problem some people seem to have with Reichen is. I enjoyed the internet radio show he did about coming out and other gay related topics. If all he cared about was getting attention, he could've just written a book about being on reality tv.
#21reichen lehmkuhl's book...who knew he could even write?
Posted: 10/12/06 at 12:31pmHe's not using the book for attention - he's using the attention he already has to call more attention to something very important to him.

I'm not sure why Reichen writing a book about his experience in the military is such a source for ridicule. If he had not won The Amazing Race, would it make the book more admirable? Or is it the fact that he is doing something constructive that seems so ridiculous? I'd rather read Reichen's book than something by Coulter, Limbaugh or Falwell.

Well, they just sound like ignorant queens. I wouldn't expect them to read anything outside of a bathroom stall wall or manhunter.com. I certainly don't think their comments discredit the contents of the book, either. I guess I just don't see how being a D-List celebrity makes you a bad person, no matter what you try to accomplish. If he saved children from a burning building, would that make him a publicity whore? I don't care who he's related to, I just can't find anything so terribly wrong with the guy. And I don't even find him that attractive.
"Yes Bso - I have always found Reichen hot - it's not a secret. It does not mean that his book is any good."
It doesn't mean it's bad, either. Meh. Why not read it for yourself and then judge?
