I worked on Senator McCarty's campaign. It marked my shift away from the Republican foundation of my childhood, and launched me into a lifetime of interest in sociopolitical affairs.
I met him once during the campaign...at Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a great man, in a very quite and low-key way. And on my last visit to my childhood home, remnants of the flower bumpersticker (that PJ posted above) were still visible on my mom's mailbox, right where I had plastered it in 1968.
I was proud to be Clean for Gene.
