I love this movie as well. I got it on VHS as a kid and would watch it over and over, even though the Wheelers freaked me out.

I have some of the Oz books (The Scarecrow of Oz being a particular favorite, as well as The Land of Oz- especially for General Jinjur) but I haven't read them all yet. I should probably get on that.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

I also love watching the pre-MGM Oz films:

I love Billina. She tells it like it is.

I actually have a stuffed chicken that i named Billina, and I used to pretend like she could talk.

Come to think of it, from the ages of about 4-17, I'd act the story out in my front/backyard and living room, and bedroom. I was always Dorothy.

God, I was a gay little kid.

"And the hard-core Oz fans thought it was too unfaithful to the two Oz books that it was based on (The Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz). "

This was my main issue with it. I would have much preferred two separate films had been done -- I thought combining the two just squeezed too much into the first film.

Having said that, however, I thought it was a good film overall, and I thought Fairusa Balk was a good Dorothy. Ozma and her costume were pretty much true to the original illustrations, if memory serves me correctly.

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

"How about a little appreciation for Journey Back to Oz, featuring the combined talents of Liza Minnelli, Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, Milton Berle, Margaret Hamilton, Herschel Bernardi, Rise Stevens, Danny Thomas and Jack E. Leonard?"

I like that film much more than 'Return to Oz'. The voice acting in it was terrific. I also enjoy the film's songs. Plus, it's not scary at all.
