He was a very famous photographer.
He photographed many celebrities including Broadway stars for the New Yorker among other magazines.

Posted: 10/1/04 at 4:47pmAvedon was a great photographer. Right up there with Ritts and Scavullo. I love all their work.

he was also fairly well known for taking unflattering photos of celebs to make points, sometimes I think. Look for Avedon photos of Marilyn Monroe...most of them are NOT in her best moments.

Posted: 10/1/04 at 5:00pmThat's one of the appealing things about his photos, they often showed the real person. They were never done to make the eprson look bad, it always seemed more like he was trying to find the art and beauty in realism. You can see this more in his non celeb photos which are some of the most beautiful and haunting. There was series he did of average people in various parts of the country. They were compiled into a book but, I can't remember the title.

Thank goodness for all the great work he left behind - and cheers to the long life he had to live.
This made me think of POLisPOL - I miss his posting.

Avedon was one of those I envied. You can look into teh face of someone he ahs photographed and see their entire lives. Amazing that anyone can capture that.
