I never made the Jonathan Winters connection and it is so true--very much the original. Williams has, IMO, a kind of comic genius, but it comes wrapped up in that painful shtick--I can't watch him. So un-funny to me.

Now--Eddie Izzard=pure genius. He is amazingly funny and smart--his humor is based on eclectic and scholarly thoughts, but he asks the right question to elicit crazy funny routines. Buy the DVD's:--F***ing brilliant:

"cake or death?"

Robin Williams is one of the best comics around, as well as actors. I will NEVER understand how someone could not like his Oscar-winning performance in "Good Will Hunting" as Sean. He's been around for a while now, and I hope he never stops. Yes, Jonathon Winters is reportedly his idol, but I have to say their shticks are quite different. I got to see Williams live at the Beacon theater and met him after and he was incredibly nice. The man is obviously a genius, and no one said it better than James Lipton when he interviewed him on Actor's Studio: "All of us admire the lightning fast reflexes of great athletes. For those of us who have not been blessed with your gift, how do you explain the mental reflexes that you deploy and are deploying tonight with such awesome speed! Are you thinking FASTER than the rest of us? What the HELL is going on?"

Apparently he is a well-known joke thief but I cannot find any instances of this occurring.

I can believe it though. I really really doubt that those "wacky stream of conciousness" thoughts that flow out of him are 100% his.

He was very nice when I bumped into him in Central Park at the Bethesda Fountain. We looked at the fountain and (at the time I didn't know) I wondered why the angel was holding out its hand; perhaps she was getting the phone. He promptly came out with: "She's Cellephony, the goddess of communication."
