re: Rock Star: INXS

OH and PS...Marty's bandmates were on the local news last night saying they wish him luck, but want him to place 2nd or 3rd. They are rooting for MiG.

"If Marty wins, we're INXS' road crew".

re: Rock Star: INXS

re: Rock Star: INXS

Tara is gone.

But the other bottom two were Brandon and Ty. TY! I can't believe it.

Jordis did an encore of "the Man Who Sold the World".

No lighters are held aloft for 'Rock Star'
By Gary Levin, USA TODAY

Rock Star is no rock star on TV this summer.

In a season of mostly weak network programming, the big-budget series aimed at finding a new lead singer for the Australian band INXS — the latest from Survivor producer Mark Burnett — has been a high-profile disappointment for CBS.

Ratings for the reality series, which airs three times a week, have been anemic, from an average 4.1 million viewers for Wednesday's results shows to 6.2 million for Tuesday's performance episodes. That's tough sledding for a project with a nearly $3-million-a-week price tag from reality TV's top producer.

Conceding defeat, the network has announced plans to dump Monday's episodes (which averaged 5.5 million) on sibling cable channel VH1, which will air them on Sundays at 8 ET/PT starting this weekend. Those half-hour installments observe contestants in their Hollywood mansion, at vocal and staging "clinics" and claiming dibs from a list of approved songs for that week's contest.

Tuesday's (10 ET/PT) and Wednesday's (9 ET/PT) shows will remain on CBS, but the entire series is being cut short by two weeks. It will now end Sept. 20.

Observers trace Rock Star's woes to several flaws:

•Narrow focus. The emphasis on rock limited the show's appeal, says Initiative Media analyst Stacey Lynn Koerner. "It's a performance show in one genre of music, whereas American Idol brings in so many different eras and styles," from pop to Motown to country, she says. The faded popularity of INXS since its heyday 15 years ago also could have been a turnoff.

•Scheduling. Slotting so many episodes of an untested show was a risk that didn't pay off. "We like the quality of the show, but we realize three times a week is a lot to ask of the audience," CBS scheduling chief Kelly Kahl says. Not to mention sandwiching half-hour episodes between comedies and dramas.

•Talent. Casting 15 established performers helped Burnett secure rights to popular songs. But it kept curious viewers from flocking to the kind of bad-audition segments that jump-started Idol.

•Idol comparisons. And while Rock Star's producers initially sought to distance the show from Idol, it has come to more closely resemble Fox's hit. Guitarist/commentator Dave Navarro and INXS band members now offer feedback remarkably similar to Idol's judges. They even adopted one of Paula Abdul's catchphrases, telling one contestant about this week's performance, "You made it your own."

Rock Star is the latest stumble by Burnett, who saw tepid interest in NBC's The Contender, Fox's The Casino and NBC's The Restaurant. Two editions of NBC's The Apprentice, featuring Donald Trump and Martha Stewart, will air this fall. Yet amid networks' doldrums, Rock Star has managed one feat: Tuesday's hour regularly wins its time slot among young adults, beating usually reliable Law & Order reruns.

re: Rock Star: INXS

The big difference between INXS and Idol - INXS kicks Idol's wussy ass.

And the judges are MUCH more "real." Paula Abdul neither created nor coined the phrase "you made it your own" - she just overused it to the point of ineffectiveness.

Jordis can kick Clay Aiken's ass anytime!

I kind of hope she doesn't win, and releases a solo album.

And who in the hell keeps voting for JD?

re: Rock Star: INXS

Any thoughts on last night's episode?

Jordis: stunning, again

Jessica: bland, again

Ty: great take on the song...he was given a great song to start with and took it to a new, fresh place...fantastic

Suzie: keeps improving. She and Jordis are my favorite females.

Marty: you gotta give the guy credit. He took one of the most banal, poppy songs in history (but I still love it...) and made it dark and brooding and sold it.

Deanna: usually one of my favorites, but last night didn't do her justice. Great song, just not a great delivery.

JD: I don't understand who keeps voting for this guy. He's good at the rock "performance" but last night proved a) he's an average vocalist and b) he's an ass.

MiG: WOW. MiG stole the show last night. He gave such a heartfelt, beautiful performance. I'm almost certain he'll get the encore tonight...

Anyone else even watching? There's some amazing talent on this show...

Awwww...it makes me sad that no one else is into this show.

I'm resurrecting this thread in tribute to Jordis...sad, but understandable.

This girl WILL have a recording contract soon, mark my words.

In the meantime, go anyone but JD!

re: Rock Star: INXS

IS SHE GONE???? I couldn't watch this week either... oh that's awful...details please...

I think Deanna is going to win.

re: Rock Star: INXS

Marty is my pic. I love his soulful Cobainesque look and voice, but he is so pleasant and sincere.
#69

re: Rock Star: INXS

Deanna was booted 2 weeks ago, Ty last week, and Jordis this week. Jordis had her first horrible performance a few weeks back, singing "Dream On", and has not really recovered since.

We have Marty, Suzie, JD, and Mig as the final four.

Marty has improved SIGNIFICANTLY and is one of the top contestants. Suzie has also vastly improved and is the favorite *vocalist* left in the competition. JD is doing well, but is such an ass that I can't root for him. And then there's Mig. Mig is a sweetheart and a great performer (not to mention sexy as hell), but I'm starting to think the "Mig the Rig" rumor (that he's already won) is true. He is the only one that has never been in the bottom three, despite 2 weak performance in a row.

Two more weeks til the finale.

re: Rock Star: INXS

brdlwyr,

I've met Marty a couple of times and he IS a really nice Midwestern guy. I'm thinking a Marty/JD final two...
#71

re: Rock Star: INXS

I wondered whether Mig was hand picked. My wife likes him. I am rooting for Marty. I think is is such an entertaining show and all are so talented.
#72

re: Rock Star: INXS

Sorry. I meant Suzie.

And I thought Jordis did great with Imagine...I have tried to catch up on the weekends when VH1 reruns the episodes.

re: Rock Star: INXS

They are all so good. I'm sad any one left has to leave...except JD (have I mentioned he's an ass?).

Suzie has really impressed me. She's got a gorgeous voice.

But, like brdlwyr, I have to root for my hometown boy, Marty.

But, man I'd love to be Mrs. MiG. Have you SEEN his abs?

re: Rock Star: INXS
