"Jean" still surprises me every time I watch the BRODIE film; it serves its complex subject so beautifully, and hasn't dated. It always seems to be working in tandem with Maggie Smith's performance, in some mysterious way complimenting her, sometimes in counterpoint to the actual content of a scene. I suppose one could argue that the original Murial Spark tale was purposely devoid of such a potentially sentimental take on its antiheroine. Yet the song burrows beneath the story proper and to my ears supports Jean Brodie's romantic take on the world. It's both about the character and a reflection of her feelings.
