Regarding accents in this show, would it be wise to have one in a callback setting? And, what is the proper accent for 'Dot?'
Thanks

French people living in France should not have an accent when they are speaking French. Would you use a Danish accent in Hamlet? Would you use an Italian accent in Romeo & Juliet?
The only characters that should have accents are the ones who are NOT French - Franz and Frieda, the German servants, and Mr. and Mrs., the American (Southern) tourists.
In some productions, old Marie in Act 2 has been played with a Southern accent, since theoretically Louis and Dot came to America so Louis could work for Mr. and Mrs. as their pastry chef.

Thank you! I couldn't figure it out for the life of me. I haven't seen the show. I've only heard of it, so I can't offer any advice. It sounds interesting from Jon's description of all the eclectic characters. I might have to read it. Break of leg at your audition!

Well, in the most recent London Cast Recording they have Dot with a cockney accent and George with a more refined British. I found it interesting because it hinted at the class distinctions between the two of them. And I found that the accents really worked for the show.

I agree with Lost, no accent unless they specifically ask for one.

sondheim shows dont have an accent for the people who are from the place where the story takes place, but he usually goes for a midatlantic english. No accent, but not american, more refined and actor-ish

Don't do any accent during the audition but, if they ask for one, try your best at whatever they want. But I just played Dot and didn't use any accent in either act and frankly, I preferred it that way.

lol, the london cast recording has dot with a working class northern/yorkshire accent.
big difference if you're listening with british ears, it must all sound the same to other contries.
I would definately take all your info from the show itself - dot is definately lower class, whereas george is a lot more educated.
all in all you are there to show them what you can do. I wouldn't add accents at audition stage as that could hinder what you have to offer.
