Good Grief is a great album, but it’s also a very weepy album. Knowing her connection with Gavin Creel, and hearing her sing those songs having Gavin and her manager Chad Joseph in mind… Her voice pulls out a sadness in me.
She has an earthiness that telegraphs a public persona very similar to Bruce Springsteen’s (IMO). She (also like Springsteen) has a unique singing style and voice that you can distinguish from other singers as being distinctly Sara.
How rooted in human nature is one to be able to write (not in just words, but in song) the characters’ stories in Waitress?
Or to write She Used to Be Mine that begins with the lyric, “Dear Baby...”. It’s definitely not a musical theater “I Want” song, but all the elements are there. It falls towards the end of the show instead of within the first few scenes, but it’s still an “I Want” song at its core.
My favorite versions of the song are performed by men. If I have to pick only one favorite, I’d say Jeremy Jordon, but regarding the women who’ve sung it, my favorite is definitely Sara Bareilles.
