The reactions to Sasha Grey online fascinate me. Some men seem to have an almost fatherly reaction to her, like they want to protect her from her career choice. They can't accept that she wants to be doing what she's doing, or that she might like it. They think she must be putting up a front or detaching herself from her work. Many people seem to believe that she'll come to regret doing porn.

I'm curious about how people here view porn actors. Can you be a well-adjusted person and do porn? Do you think it's possible to be a female porn star and come through the business relatively unscathed? Can you be empowered and not degraded by your job if you're in a business where you're a sex object and the majority of the consumers are men?

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

I have seen many interviews of female porn stars who seem to feel a sense of empowerment by being the porn industry, but I do think it is much more rare for a woman so young to enter the industry voluntarily without a sign of naivete or desperation. From what I've read and seen, the female performers who achieve star status generally do have a lot of power in dictating what happens, to whom and when. But it takes a long time to earn that sort of power and it is strictly based on sales. When a porn star's sales begin to diminish, she goes right back down the ladder and simply works until she can't get hired any more.

I wonder if there are a lot of stories of these women genuinely having no regrets when they are older and their star no longer shines. Marilyn Chambers might be the exception, as she went into producing and was in the game almost up until she died.

Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!
