... is the best damn Wizard of Oz-related music to be created and released in the last five years. Seriously.

I just saw em in a teeny tiny club the other night, which is something of a treat considering they're playing The Royal Albert Hall in England in the coming weeks. They're a lot of fun live, very tight and with a great sound.

"You know we came to rock, but we also came to disco!"

"Return to Oz" was the last song in the set and lots of fun. Ana Matronic is a much bigger presence live than she is on the record, which gets better and better with repeated listenings.

Oh yeah, and Baby Daddy is really cute too. Some guy in the audience shouted out "I love you Baby Daddy" and Ana said, "Yeah, well, who doesn't? Another bear to add to the collection."

Jake Shears is a very dynamic front man. He's got the body of a young Iggy Pop, the moves of a young Mick Jagger, some Elton and George Michael vocal influences, and a sense of humor.

In other words, we're practically twins.

I bought the CD and love it too. "Take Your Mama Out" is the best song Elton John never wrote.

It sure is, and it was the real high point of the show. A tiny room packed with three hundred people swaying and bobbing and helping out a bit on the chorus. Now THAT, my friends, is live performance!

A friend just sent me this blurb on Ana Matronic:

Used to perform at San Francisco's famed Trannyshack (one of the only female artists performing as female). Is a big fan of "The Bionic Woman." When Britney Spears requested help from Scissor Sisters for a remix, Matronic replied, "Not to be rude, but your songs are about as interesting as a box of hair."

Thanks Namo! I listened to some clips and I really like it. This is the first band I've been excited about in a long time.

Anybody remember Voice of the Beehive? I really liked them. Whatever happened to them?

I bought the Scissor Sisters CD a couple of weeks ago and was very impressed. I love the pretty diverse styles of music on the CD - dance/electronic, rock, ballad, pop, BeeGee falsetto... Magruder is correct that "Take Your Mama Out" sounds just like early Elton John, circa. the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road era. The ballad "Mary" is a keeper, also. I love their stage names - what a hoot! I understand this band is going gangbusters in the UK right now. I predict that they will be big here in the US soon. I'm sorry I missed them last Sunday night here in Atlanta. They were on the bill at a small club along with Franz Ferdinand for a show sponsored by our local "new rock" (alternative?) radio station.

Oh you shoulda gone! The dj who opened the show for the Sisters when I saw em played a Franz Ferdinand song and the crowd went bonkers.

Matt, for me, Voice of the Beehive will always be remembered as the sound of the Gay and Lesbian March on Washington in 1987. Or, one of the sounds. I read they did a reunion tour this year.

The Sister's "Return to Oz" is as good a statment of the ravages of crystal meth as I've heard put to music this year.

Can't believe they're from New York but are only about to break in the States. Then again - they have a very European feel to them. I saw them at the "Attitude" Party in London, doing a set of 7 songs - they're absolutely amazing live. Try and see them.

Look, I'm totally shilling the tour on a volunteer basis. Mayhaps the Sisters will send me a complimentary t-shirt for my efforts? You Chicagoans have a chance to see em this very night!

I'm gonna pout that I just missed a chance to see them. But, I bet they will be back in NYC soon. Of course, my luck, it won't be a small club--it will be the freakin GARDEN! re: Scissor Sisters' 'Return to Oz'
