Send Dick Durbin some Love!

We in Illinois are blessed to have 2 great senators- one of them is very high profile and wonderful (Barak Obama) and one of them is usually very low profile and even more wonderful (Dick Durbin). Well, Senator Durbin spoke out yesterday on the floor of the Senate and condemned the abuse of prisoners in US "Detainee" camps. He read from a FBI report detailing these abuses and said that this kind of treatment is what you'd expect in a Nazi prison camp and said that the greatest nation in the world should not be treating anyone this way, even it's enemies.

Needless to say, the Republican attack machine has struck at full force. The US Press Secretary called him "Reprehensible" and I have no doubt that Rush Limbaugh will spend his 3 hours today bashing Dick Durbin as un-American.

So, if you agree that our detention camps and interrogation centers need to respect basic human rights, or even if you just think that a US Senators duties include calling for an investigation when reports like this are being ignored, Give Senator Durbin a Shout out and say "Thanks." I called his Springfield office this morning and talked to a delighted staffer who was thrilled to get a "good" call for a change!

I think it's a very good sign that we finally have a Democrat who is willing to speak out, and we need to make sure we support him for it!

Before the lovefest begins, you should take a look at prison abuse in Durbin's own state. It's not pretty.

ah....the typical Republican response. Deflecting to another issue. We are talking, Goth, about US prisoner-of-war abuses, not US prisons or the state of US prisons.
Perhaps you should stick with the issue.......

That the best the R's got Gotham? You never know how the conservative media will try to spin the debate but that seems lame even by the late Lee Atwater's standards- Yes, the Cook County Jail is under investigation for prisoner abuse. Key words are "under invetigation:" Grand Jury, special prosecutor, a judicial inquiry, a civil rights probe. It's not being swept under a rug and it will be dealt with. I wonder what connection this has to the issue at hand-- other than a Republican slap down and a google search of "Illinois Prisons"? Did you even notice that the link you supplied also listed a TEN PART news investigation into the problem? I'd love to see that sort of attention paid to the Detainee situation.

Oh, and I was wrong about Rush Limbaugh-- he's not going to spend his three hours today criticising Dick Durbin, he's calling on him to resign. Because, you know, if you don't fall into line lockstep with George Bush you're unfit to hold public office. He's also telling his listeners to call Durbin and thank him "For showing America what Democrats really are-- traitors". He's also saying that "Al-Jareeza is endorsing Durbin for re-election." Well they said that about John Kerry, so I guess if it works, don't go off message.

The second part was just a statement to anyone out of state who disagreed with Durbin.
